New recipe book for athletes and health professionals managing gastrointestinal disturbances

A new e-recipe book, Using Food as Medicine: Exercise and the Gut has been released by Monash University’s Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food.

Author Dr Ricardo Costa said the book was inspired by the hundreds of athletes, from a wide range of sports and competitive levels, who have contacted Monash University Sports Dietetic Research Team requesting advice and guidance.

“Our main advice focuses on the prevention and management of debilitating exercise-associated gastrointestinal symptoms that affect athletes’ training and competition,” Dr Costa said.

“It is also inspired by the hundreds of exercise and nutrition professionals who have completed our online course: Food as Medicine: Food, Exercise and the Gut.”

The book is tailored towards those completing the online course (https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/fam-exercise-gut), providing practical dietary examples to support the theoretical material delivered.

It also provides a starting point for athletes and supporting health and exercise professionals to manage exercise associated gastrointestinal disturbances and symptoms.
What’s included in this new e-book?
  • 40 easy to prepare recipes for main meals, snacks and pre/post exercise, with nutritional properties to support the gut in response to exercise stress
  • Information on how exercise effects the gut
  • Practical tips
