NHMRC Synergy Grants MRO Application Reviews

The MRO's Research Development Team will be supporting the 2021 round of NHMRC Synergy Grants applications.

The objective of the Synergy Grants scheme is to support outstanding multidisciplinary teams of investigators to work together to answer major questions that cannot be answered by a single investigator. Just 10 grants are awarded, each valued at $5M (total, over 5 years).

The Research Development Team reviewed all Monash submitted 2019 Synergy applications (n= 9; 5 @ Stage 2; 3 awarded) and is available to discuss trends, and effective strategies to strengthen your application.

MRO Reviews

The Research Development Team will be conducting reviews of the Synergy section, and will provide a generalist review of the Knowledge Gain section (prioritising the first page and aspects of scheme fit). Unfortunately they don't have capacity to review the individual track record responses.

If you would like to participate, please request a review here by 10 March 2021

Reviews will begin on 17 March 2021.

Please contact mro.researchdevelopment@monash.edu for more information on reviews and support.

Further information on the Synergy Grants opportunity will be distributed after scheme open (anticipated 24 February 2021).

NHMRC Investigator Grants, Faculty MNHS Career Disruption Support Initiative

The Faculty Research Office is offering reviews for NHMRC Investigator Grant applicants who have experienced career disruptions.  It is a strategic priority for the Faculty to provide support to researchers who have experienced career disruptions to ensure they are not disadvantaged. This review is open to all applicants in MNHS, at all Investigator Grant levels, who have experienced career disruptions.

Applicants who participate in this initiative will receive one anonymous review of the Career Disruption and Career Context sections of their application.  The reviews will be conducted by members of the Faculty Review Academy, an esteemed cohort of MNHS researchers with extensive NHMRC experience as Fellows and/or reviewers.

Reviews will be conducted on a rolling basis.  Applicants can request a review any time before 8 March by filling in this form.  They will receive their review 7-14 days after the request is made. Full instructions can be found in the form.

The NHMRC defines career disruptions as a prolonged interruption to an applicant’s capacity to work, due to:

·  pregnancy

·  major illness/injury

·  carer responsibilities.

A period of career disruption is defined as:

·  a continuous absence from work for 90 calendar days or more, and/or

·  continuous, long-term, part-time employment (with defined %FTE) due to circumstances classified as Career Disruption, with the absence amounting to a total of 90 calendar days or more.

If you are not sure if your personal circumstances can be considered a career disruption in your Investigator Grant application, please email the Monash Research Office (MRO) to discuss this further at
mhs@monash.edu.

If you have any questions about this initiative, please email the Faculty Research Office  (
medicine.research@monash.edu).

The L’OrĂ©al-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship Program - Now Open

In 1998 L'OrĂ©al and UNESCO founded the For Women in Science program to promote and highlight the critical importance of ensuring greater participation of women in science. Each year, the program recognises the achievements of exceptional female scientists at different stages of their careers and awards them with Fellowships to help further their research.

Each Fellow is awarded $25,000 for a one year project. This is intended to provide practical help for the winners to undertake research in their chosen fields and the winners may choose to spend their fellowship on buying scientific equipment, paying for child care costs, conference & travel costs or other items they may need to continue their research.

The National Fellows must be within five years of their PhD (not including career breaks) for research at an Australian or New Zealand academic or research institution.

Applications close Monday 1 March 2021, 11:59pm

Applications Open for BioMelbourne Network - 2021 Women in Leadership Awards

The BioMelbourne Network Women in Leadership Awards acknowledge and celebrate leadership and commitment to driving change and impact in the health industry.

The Awards recognise that leadership occurs at all levels within an organisation and throughout the wider sector. There are three awards broadly targeting the evolving stages of an impactful career – nominally active in the industry for 2-4 years, 5-10 years and 10-15+ years.

For 2021 the criteria for each category remain the same, but the titles of the BioMelbourne Network Women in Leadership Awards have been slightly revised to allow easier distinction. The Award categories are:

  1. Emerging Leadership Award – Mover & Shaker This award recognises emerging leaders, on a new path in approximately the last 2-4 years, who are rising stars in the industry.
  2. Inspiring Leadership Award – Making It Happen This award recognises those playing an inspiring and pivotal role in leadership of a project, partnership, or collaborative initiative, approximately within the last 5 to 10 years.
  3. Distinguished Leadership Award – Impact For Industry This award recognises outstanding contributions by senior executive leaders with a career history of contributions over approximately 10-15+ years.

Nominations close Friday 19 February 2021.
