“After spending the bulk of my professional and research life at the Prince of Wales Hospital, the transition to Monash opens a whole new world of challenges and achievements through collaborative and successful engagement with critical care colleagues at Monash,” said Professor Shehabi.

Widely published in high impact journals including JAMA, AJRCCM, Critical Care Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine, Professor Shehabi is the lead researcher (CIA) in the Sedation Practice in Intensive Care Evaluation (SPICE) Program, endorsed by the ANZICS CTG and funded by a major NHMRC project grant.

SPICE currently operates in four continents and will soon run in more than 50 ICUs worldwide including ANZ, Malaysia, Saudi, Switzerland, Italy, France, UK and Canada.

Since 2004, Professor Shehabi has been Medical Director of Acute Care Services Program at Prince of Wales Hospital in NSW. This program includes Critical Care, Anaesthesia, Cardiovascular Medicine and Surgery, Neuroscience Institute, Spinal services and Age Care.

He previously held the role of Director Intensive Care Services at Prince of Wales and is also Professor at the Clinical School of Medicine at University of New South Wales.

“I have always viewed Monash a power house for research and innovative thinking and am excited to join the leaders and the giants of Monash and be part of a success story for Monash critical care,” added Professor Shehabi.

“I am delighted that Professor Shehabi is joining our team and brings with him extensive experience as a clinician researcher as well as in senior management,” said Monash Health Chief Executive Shelly Park.

“We are very fortunate to have been able to attract Professor Shehabi to Monash University and Monash Health,” said Professor Peter Ebeling AO, Head of the Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health.

“In addition to clinical excellence, he will be able to expand his role in the ANZICS CTG research network and grow clinical intensive care research at Monash Health.”

Professor Shehabi will commence his new role in early April.  On a personal note, he is looking forward to enjoying a cosmopolitan lifestyle in Melbourne.
