What is work design?

From The WorkSafe WorkWell Team.

Poor work design isn’t about ill-chosen office wallpaper - it’s a serious risk to your employees’ wellbeing, and therefore your business.

What is work design?

Work design considers not only the type of work (e.g. tasks and activities within a role), but also the workplace environment, working relationships and responsibilities of employees.

When a workplace has poor work design, employees…

  • Experience burnout
  • Don’t respond appropriately to normal work challenges
  • Feel overwhelmed
  • Take more sick leave
  • Have an increased risk of workplace injuries
The common denominator: heavy or unmanageable workloads.

Think you might be seeing the signs of workplace overload? Use this checklist to identify potential issues. Even better: get your employees involved too.

Correcting workplace overload is so much more than just reducing tasks. There are cultural and environmental changes you can make, from management down to an employee level that will protect your employees against burnout and improve your workplace’s mental health.

The result of good work design?

A happier, healthier workplace that can respond quickly to problems as they arise, where employees feel balanced and productive.

Stay Well,
The WorkSafe WorkWell Team.
P.S Still thinking about how to reduce the burnout risk of employees with too-high workloads? Add the “Work Design” action to your WorkWell Toolkit Dashboard now to get started.
