While the award recognises the large body of work leading up to this finding, it also provides further support to move this exciting research forward to understand the functional consequences of this mutation. This grant will allow Dr Hill and her team to explore how a new genetic mutation identified in schizophrenia causes brain and behaviour dysfunction.
Speaking of the research, Dr Hill said, "We will make a genetically modified mouse that contains the gene mutation and study the effects of this mutation on brain cell development, connectivity and mouse behaviour. Using this model we may then identify new therapeutic targets to develop for people with schizophrenia who harbor this mutation".
"This project represents a new precision medicine approach that is highly successful in other medical fields but is new to the field of psychiatric research", she added.
