Outstanding research supervision recognised at SCS

Dr Connie Wong with her team
Dr Connie Wong from the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health (SCS) was recognised as an outstanding research supervisor, being named a finalist in the Monash Postgraduate Association’s Supervisor of the Year Awards last week.

Head of the Neuroinflammation Research Group, Centre for Inflammatory Diseases, Connie currently supervises three PhD students, Kathryn Prame Kumar, Ray Shim and SJ Shen, who nominated her for the award.

Kathryn said that Connie is a partner on their academic journey and centres mentorship around the pillars of trust, encouragement and continual learning.

Connie patiently spends her time teaching us and with an ‘open door’ policy, her office remains a welcoming space,” Kathryn said.

“Being part of Connie’s group has affirmed my desire to pursue research as a career.”

“Connie gives us a sense of belonging and takes the time to instil confidence in us. When we think of Connie, we think of a leader and a friend,” Kathryn said.

Final year PhD candidate SJ Shen said a great supervisor provides students with relevant skills to reach one’s full potential.

“The research journey is full of ups and downs, and unexpected obstacles, but with a brilliant supervisor, we have full confidence that they’ll support and guide us through,” SJ said.

“A great supervisor is also one that isn't afraid to go above and beyond for their team to ensure their success.”

Connie’s team agrees it’s important to honour the efforts of supervisors and let them know they appreciate all they’ve done.

“Connie is generous with her time, knowledge and skills,” said Kathryn.

“We believe Connie’s vision is to build and empower her students as well as to instil them with a love of research, health and science.”

“Our team is like the Hotel California—many of us who join Connie’s group stay on and are reluctant to leave,” Kathryn said.
