- Biosafety Officers
- Supervisors (whose staff undertake research in this area)
- Technical staff who undertake such research
- Postgrad and Honours students whose research involves gene technologies

Overview of the course:

Following this session researchers will have a better understanding of working with biologicals that are regulated under either the Gene Technology Act and Regulations or the Quarantine Act.
Intended outcomes:
Participants will be aware of what activities need Biosafety Clearances, what activities require OGTR approval and what facilities and behavioural practices are suitable for their research activities.

Course content:

All work involving the use of recombinant DNA technologies to generate genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is regulated by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator and must be approved by the Institutional Biosafety Committee.  This session will explore what constitutes a GMO and what researchers must do before conducting research to either generate or work with existing GMOs, including classifications of dealing, certification of facilities where dealings will be conducted and procedural requirements to be followed when working with GMOs.  The session will also inform researchers about the Australian law in relation to importation of biological materials from other countries and the various approval permit requirements and facility certifications under the auspice of Australian Quarantine Inspection Services (AQIS).
