Richard Ferrero awarded competitive NHMRC Fellowship

On Friday, Minister for Health, the Honourable Peter Dutton, announced $71.2 million in NHMRC Fellowship and Mental Health Targeted Call for Research Grants. In total, the NHMRC announced 74 Research Fellowships, with 13 awarded to Monash University researchers including MIMR-PHI Institute’s Associate Professor Richard Ferrero.  

Richard deserves this recognition of his research excellence and vision as a leader in his field, as well as the clinical impact and innovation of his work. Head of CIIID’s Gastrointestinal Infection and Inflammation Group, Richard will use his five-year $611, 645 NHMRC Research Fellowship to continue dissecting the role of NOD-like receptors (NLRs) in Helicobacter pylori disease, which is linked to development of peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer, and mucosa-associated-lymph tissue lymphoma, a central focus of his team’s work. By improving physiological and molecular understanding of this disease, the hope to deliver improved diagnostics and treatments, as well as develop a vaccine.
