NHMRC Capping Rules - Investigator Grants & Ideas Grants

If you submitted an NHMRC Investigator Grant application to the 2020 round (submitted November 2019), you are only able to apply for one Ideas Grant this year. This is because there are capping rules which apply to the number of applications you are able to submit in a single round.

In the same round you can either apply for:
  • x2 Ideas Grants; OR
  • x1 Investigator Grant and x1 Ideas Grant
If your Investigator Grant was not awarded, your application still counts as an "application" for the round, therefore you are only able to submit one further application this year as it is considered to be in the same round as the Investigator Grant applied for in November.

The NHMRC considers a "round" based upon when funding will commence.  In this case, the 2020 Investigator Grants and this year's Ideas Grants will both begin funding from 1 Jan 2021, therefore they are considered to be in the same round. Please refer to the NHMRC Eligiblity guidance for further details.

Please note, if you submitted an NHMRC Investigator Grant application to the 2020 round (submitted November 2019), and were successful you cannot apply for an Ideas Grant until you are in the final year of your Investigator Grant.
