Hypoglycemia in Hospitals

All staff and students are invited to attend a special lecture, "Hypoglycemia in Hospitals", delivered by Professor Brian M. Frier, Honorary Professor of Diabetes, The Queen's Medical Research Institute, University of Edinburgh.

Professor Frier's principal research interest is the pathophysiology of hypoglycemia in
humans with particular relevance to diabetes. He has published extensively, particularly in
this field, and has co-edited two multi-author international textbooks on hypoglycemia and
diabetes. He co-authored the chapter on diabetes for five editions of "Davidson's
Principles and Practice in Medicine," and was editor-in-chief of an international, open
access, on-line journal called "Diabetic Hypoglycemia." Other research interests include
insulin therapy, cognitive function, and driving and diabetes.

In 2004, the Hungarian Diabetes Association awarded him the Somogyi Award for his
research in hypoglycaemia and diabetes and in 2009 he gave the Banting Memorial
Lecture at the natioanl meeting of  Diabetes UK.

Professsor Frier was Vice-President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
(2008-2012), and was Chair of the Medical Advisory Panel on Driving and Diabetes to the
Secretary of  State for Transport in the UK from 2001-2012.

Brian Frier, BSc (Hons), MD, FRCP(Edin), FRCP( Glas) is Honorary Professor
of Diabetes at the University of Edinburgh, affiliated with the British Heart Foundation
Centre for Cardiovascular Science. He was previously Consultant Physician in general
medicine and diabetes at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and in the Western Infirmary
and Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow. He graduated in medicine from the University
of Edinburgh, trained in Scotland, and was a Clinical Research Fellow at Cornell University
Medical Center in New York, USA.

The meeting will be videoconferenced to a number of sites outside MonashHealth
