SCS will host a Bachelor of Medical Science (Hons) information night to recruit BMedSc(Hons) students for 2018.  We encourage your attendance as this is a good opportunity to make contact with a potential research student.

Save the Date ‐ 2017 MNHS Graduate Research Supervisor & Staff Forum, 2 May

The Associate Dean (Graduate Research), Professor Nellie Georgiou‐Karistianis, warmly invites you to attend the Faculty’s Annual Graduate Research Supervisor and Staff Forum.

The Forum aims to cover important topics, including:

o   What changes have been recently made in graduate research?

o   What does our current graduate research landscape look like?

o   What are the Faculty’s latest strategies in graduate research?

o   Intellectual Property – why it’s important and who owns the research

o   Monash Doctoral Program – what’s new including myDevelopment

Who should attend?

All supervisors of graduate research students are strongly encouraged to attend. 

The forum provides an opportunity to learn more and become familiar with these important matters, and hear directly from the experts on how they affect your role. Come along to learn this valuable information and network with your colleagues.

Faculty Roadshow for Monash Health Translational Precinct - How to Manage Unsatisfactory Progress

Please Note: Attendance to this Roadshow will be credited towards Level 2 Supervisor Accreditation

The Faculty is committed to providing support to supervisors of graduate research students and improving candidature completions. One are which is a constant challenge for supervisors is how to manage students who are showing unsatisfactory progress. 

This roadshow is designed to highlight various options available to supervisors to assist them in this process. 

The following topics will be covered:

• How to manage a student who is showing unsatisfactory progress, both within and outside the milestone framework
• Administrative support available for managing unsatisfactory progress
• Case study examples of academic issues relating to unsatisfactory progress

Level 2 supervisor accreditation mandatory training

Mandatory training towards Level 2 supervisor accreditation will be run at the MHTP by Monash Graduate Education for all supervisors of SCS PhD students. 

Staff with primary and adjunct appointments are expected to attend one of four of these 90-minute sessions conducted in August and September.

The objectives of this professional development are to

• refresh supervisor awareness of best practice for supervision of postgraduate students,

• discuss management options in the case of problematic projects or student projects, and 

• reinforce the responsibilities of the supervisors and students in this important professional relationship.

1)   CALL FOR 2017 HONOURS, MASTERS AND PhD PROJECTS:

If you are looking to recruit a research student for 2017, please upload your proposed project(s) to the following searchable online database.  You will need your Monash Uni authcate username and password to login as 'supervisor'.

The SCS and Hudson Communications offices will prepare an on-line and hardcopy booklet using projects listed in the database.

All staff are asked to update and/or submit research project offerings via the Faculty MNHS project database - click on:  https://studentresearchprojects.med.monash.edu.au/project-search?field_school_value=59

1.       Go to “Supervisor login” listed on the top tab and type in your Monash username and authcate. 

2.       Go to “CREATE ENTRY” to enter project details and ensure to SAVE each entry. 

3.       Under the compulsory “School” field, please select  School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health

4.       Under SCS Department, please select relevant department.  Hudson researchers please select Molecular Translational Science (Hudson Institute), Deptartment of Obstetrics and Gynaecology or Department of Paediatrics.

5.       Please select the primary research theme for your project

6.       Please select a secondary research theme if relevant

To edit projects that have previously been entered in 2015 and 2016 go to tab “MY ENTRIES” and select your project.  Under “OFFER STATUS”, you can select:

• Offered (to make the project current)
• Archived (if you wish the project to remain visible to the public in site searches but is not offered)
• To un-publish the project, you will need to uncheck the “PUBLISHED” box.  These projects will still be in the database but not be visible to the public.  At any point you can re-publish the project at any time.

Note that the database is public and currently accessible from the front page of the SCS website (http://www.med.monash.edu.au/scs/  under EDUCATION click on “Available research projects”) 

Deadline for submission of projects for printing:  Friday 20^th May 2016.

PhD supervisors: Short 3 minute SURVEY on INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS for PhD students

The Faculty are undertaking an exercise to determine the current level of engagement of our graduate research students (PhDs) with respect to industry placement.  For the purposes of the data collection, and in keeping with the universities definition, industry is defined in the broadest sense to include: corporations (from small to medium enterprises to multinationals), government, non-government organisations and hospitals. 

This information will enable us to obtain a baseline of engagement with industry so that we can identify strategic ways in which we can increase and expand the opportunities for our PhD students into the future.

Winter Research Scholarships - are you looking for research students?

The online submission form for advertising your Winter projects is now open and closes Monday 2 May 5pm. If you have never submitted a project before and would like to for this period, please email Annie Mastoras (annie.mastoras@monash.edu) your authcate username and she will give you access to the form.  If you already have access you can begin to enter your project details at the following link:

If you have already submitted projects over previous rounds and want to re-advertise the same project, there is no need to re-enter all the details.

·         Once you log in, select “Manage your submitted research projects”. Your previous projects will all be listed. 
·         Select the project you wish to re-advertise.
·         Make any changes (if necessary)
·         Scroll to the bottom of the form and you will see the following statement:   This project was used in a previous round. Saving changes to this form will republish this project for applications opening: Tuesday 3 May 2016.
·         Select “Save changes” 

The website for the listing of projects available will also be live from Tuesday 3 May 2016 and will accessible at:

Students will be able to view and apply for all projects from Tuesday 3 May until Friday 20 May (5pm).

Once students submit an application they will be sent an email with a summary of their application including the 3 preferences that they have chosen.

LabArchives - Roll-out in 2016 for all NEW graduate students

What is LabArchives?

LabArchives is an electronic lab notebook (ELN). It is a secure, password-protected online software application that replaces the traditional paper notebook, and is used as a recording system for research data, meeting notes, and other relevant material.

How LabArchives will assist PhD supervisors in their role

Adoption of LabArchives will aid the supervisor in monitoring and directing PhD research. The student ELN is platform independent and viewable by web browsers and mobile devices. Results are accessible to both students and their supervisors anywhere in the world at any time. Moreover, LabArchives supports off-site co-supervision by enabling supervisors to access their student’s results and more effectively engage in the supervision process. LabArchives will also act as a repository of supervisory sessions, work plans, manuscripts and presentations.

The pilot program

A pilot program to trial the use of LabArchives has been undertaken in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (FMNHS) in 2015. The pilot has been a great success and has generated much positive feedback from its users.

Roll-out in 2016

The Faculty will be rolling-out LabArchives from 2016 onwards. As part of this process, it is expected that all enrolling graduate students adopt the use of LabArchives from 2016 onwards. Current graduate students will be encouraged to use LabArchives, particularly if their lab migrates to its use over the course of their PhDs.

How will we support you in the roll-out?

We are currently in the process of appointing a full-time ELN Coordinator who will lead and facilitate the adoption of LabArchives and to support the roll-out within FMNHS during 2016. This process is being supported by e-Solutions and the Monash Library.

Training workshops will be provided at local School levels, so that there is a clear understanding of the platform and how it works. Although LabArchives is quite an intuitive product to use, supervisors will be offered training in the first half of 2016 to ensure that they have full access to their student’s research.

We understand this will be a change in process; however, our aim is to ensure that firstly our students are trained in processes they will encounter in the work place over the course of their careers. Secondly, LabArchives serves as a support for research integrity and data security.
