Hosted by the SF-CaMM graduate research team and delivered by Dr Mai Sarraj and Liz Skuza from the Hudson Research Office, this seminar will teach:

SAVE THE DATE - Monash University Clinical Trials Centre Roadshow Presentation - Thu 6 April 2023, 12 - 1pm

Monash University is funding a new initiative to support local development of clinical trial capability, especially focussed on investigator initiated trials. This is of huge importance to SCS and has been flagged as a need by junior and senior researchers alike. The Monash University Clinical Trials Centre will be making a Roadshow Presentation on this new initiative as part of the Department of Medicine/Hudson joint seminar series on Thursday 6 April, 12-1pm.  All researchers involved in clinical trials are urged to SAVE THE DATE and attend this important presentation.

Online symposium: Food Security in Australia - leave no-one behind

Join us during Anti-Poverty Week (Tuesday 18 October 2022 10-11.45am) for this online symposium   'Food Security in Australia - leave no-one behind', brought to you by Australia's S.H.A.R.E. Collaboration. A group of researchers from Universities around the country working towards Solutions supporting Household Food Security in Australia through Research and Evidence. 

You will hear from international (Joel Berg, Hunger Free America and MaryAnne MacLeod, Food Insecurity Team, Scottish Government)  and Australian leaders (including researchers for Monash's Dept of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food) as they reflect on key lessons learnt to move the food insecurity discourse towards new and effective solutions. You will then be part of a call to action to progress this agenda in Australia.

Workshop on partnerships with philanthropic and impact investors

This workshop, convened in partnership with External Relations, Alumni and Development (ERDA), will be held 09:00-12:00 on 27th October. It will focus on what it takes to build deep and enduring partnerships with philanthropic foundations and impact investors as we seek to tackle the challenges of the age aligned with Impact 2030. Hearing from leading external voices in the philanthropy sector and key academics, we will consider:

• How do we go beyond transactional funding requests to building transformational partnerships with funders that drive impact at scale?

• How is the global philanthropic sector defining impact in partnerships and how do they perceive the role of universities? 

• What are the emerging trends in the philanthropic funding space and how can we as individuals, teams and the university position ourselves to meet them? 

• What lessons can we learn (good and bad) from previous Monash experiences to avoid repeating past mistakes and to improve program design that fosters growth and scaling of philanthropic partnerships?

When? - 09:00-12:00, 27 October 2022, followed by optional networking lunch

• 09:00-10:15am - Session 1: Q&A ‘fireside chat’ with invited senior representatives of philanthropic and impact investing organisations.

• 10.45-12:00pm - Session 2: Deep-dive session with key academics who have a track record of partnering with philanthropy for impact. This session provides an opportunity to hear first about the opportunities, challenges and lessons learned across four different case studies. 

Why participate? - Learn from invited sector leaders about trends and headwinds; Connect with colleagues beyond your faculty, institute and discipline; learn from others about their experience; understand the role that ERDA plays in supporting the development of partnerships and be part of this emerging community of practice.

What’s the ‘2022 Global Impact Workshop Series’? Our aim is to stocktake ‘who is doing what’ with the global impact sector and identify ways we can better collaborate with partners to scale our impact in line with Impact 2030’s ambitions. 

• Workshop 1, held on the 25th March, focused on our engagement with the United Nations (i.e. the World Health Organisation, UN-Women) and multilateral development banks (i.e World Bank, ADB) (see: Workshop 1 slides and Workshop 1 report here). 

• Workshop 2, held on 25th August, focused on partnerships with traditional government development/aid funders (e.g. DFAT, MFAT, USAID); international non-governmental organisations (i-NGOs) (e.g. Oxfam, Plan International); and for-profit private organisations (e.g. Cardno, GHD). (see Workshop 2 slides and Workshop 2 report here). 

• Workshop 3, planned for 27th October, is the final workshop in the series and will explore partnerships with philanthropic trusts and foundations.

SCS Education Planning Workshop

Education is moving ahead rapidly in SCS thanks to all the amazing work SCS educators have been doing during these times of uncertainty and change. To create better processes in the School to facilitate communication, collaboration and growth there is a planning afternoon for all educators in SCS to harness your thoughts and expertise to address this and answer the following questions.

• How might we better communicate governance processes?
• How might we enhance our innovations and short courses?
• How might we better support career development in education?
• How might we better conduct educational research?

The workshop will run 13 December 1.30-4.30pm.  It would be great to see everyone all in person and book a room on campus or at MMC but here is a survey to discover your preferences. Calling all women walkers - we want you!

Join the Walk for Chloe - 100 Girls, 100kms, $100k Target

On May 4th & 5th we will be walking 100km from Point Nepean to Federation Square in an effort to raise much needed funds and awareness for Chloe Saxby and other children like her who suffer from Vanishing White Matter Disease.

We are looking for Walkers and Sponsors to join our journey!

Vanishing White Matter Disease (VWM) is an extremely rare, genetic, degenerative, terminal brain disease that affects mostly children. This disease is devastating, with most patients diagnosed between the ages of 2 and 6 years old. In a very short period of time, it causes the inability to walk, talk and eat as well as blindness, deafness, loss of motor skills, mental retardation, spasticity, seizures, and coma and is followed by death often before reaching teenage years. A small bump to
the head, a temperature, a cold or even a fright could end Chloe’s life. There are only 7 known cases in Australia and around 172 living worldwide. There is currently no treatment or cure available.

Appetite hormones and weight management seminar, 2 November

The increase in overweight and obesity is a major concern with almost 2 in 3 (63%) of Australian adults now suffering from these debilitating conditions. Physical activity and food intake are the primary regulators of energy balance. The brain plays an important role in the regulation of food intake, thus increasing interest has been directed at unravelling the interplay between appetite regulating gut hormones and the central nervous system and weight management.  This special seminar will provide participants with an overview of the latest research and clinical applications of the role of gut hormones in appetite regulation and weight management.

Walk for Monash Children's Hospital: save the date 4 March 2018

Join us on Sunday 4 March 2018 and walk around the beautiful Jells Park, to help sick children and their families receive the best care at Monash Children’s Hospital. 

The Walk for Monash Children’s Hospital is a non-competitive, family friendly and fun day out with loads of activities on the day including an animal farm, kid zone, free massages, delicious food and live entertainment.

Choose between a 10km Walk, 10km Run, 5km Walk, 5km Run and 1km Walk. The event is suitable for all ages!

The Monash Medical Orchestra proudly presents our annual spring concert Starbound. This will be our last concert of the year, and we are pleased to invite you to attend. The details of the concert are as follows:

During this concert, the MMO will be playing the iconic soundtrack of Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon by John Powell, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical Jesus Christ Superstar. We are also excited to be performing Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 with talented soloists Thomas DeVries and Andrew Pang.

2017 Orchestra Update

The MMO has made a tremendously successful return to the Monash School of Rural Health in Churchill for the third consecutive year! We were also pleased to perform side-by-side with La Trobe University's medical choral group, the Vocal Chords for their very first public performance. It is always a delight working with the School of Rural Health to share our music with the rural community, and we hope to continue this tradition into future years.

Save the dates: MHTP Open Days for prospective research students 19 and 20 September

This year's Open Days for prospective research students (Hons, Masters and PhD) will be held over two nights - 19 and 20 September.

The 19 September event will take place at the university's main Clayton campus in the Campus Centre, where prospective students will hear presentations about research opportunities at the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health (SCS) and the Hudson Institute of Medical Research. Supervisors will also be able to talk to students and promote their projects.

The following evening, students will be invited to tour our labs and meet supervisors at the Monash Health Translation Precinct (MHTP).

If you are interested in recruiting a student for 2018 and are interested in attending, please keep these dates free.
