Call for applications - 2019 Faculty Travel Grant - for eligible SCS Early Career Researchers

Under the Faculty Travel Grant Scheme 2019, the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health (SCS) is offering 11 travel grants, each valued at $1000.  These grants are to support early to mid-career researchers (Levels A-C) for their international conference travel, and allocation is contingent upon abstract acceptance.  We now invite applications from eligible SCS staff.

Trainee opportunities at the 2019 World Congress on Developmental Origins of Health and Disease in Melbourne

The 11th World Congress on the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease is being held in Melbourne from October 20-23. This will be a great opportunity to present your work and network with DOHaD researchers from around the world. The abstract deadline has just been extended to March 1, so there is still plenty of time to register your interest to attend!

2018 FMNHS Early Career Researcher (ECR) Publication Prize - APPLY NOW!!!!

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (MNHS) is committed to developing Faculty-based Early Career Researcher (ECR) initiatives, to assist our ECRs in the development of their research careers.  In addition to the emphasis placed on a strong track record in research publications and competitive funding, there is also the requirement for ECRs to secure competitive Prizes & Awards.  In support of this, the Faculty Research Office offers the FMNHS ECR Publication Prize.

ECRs are invited to nominate one 2017 research publication for the 2018 FMNHS ECR Publication Prize [EPP 2018]. Six ECR Publication Prizes are awarded per year, with one prize allocated for each Faculty-based broad discipline:

1. The Robert Porter Prize for Laboratory Based Sciences;
2. The John McNeil Prize for Public Health Research;
3. The Henry Krum Prize for Clinical Sciences;
4. The Jenny Keating Prize for Nursing and Allied Health;
5. Social and Educational Research; and
6. The Jenny Redman Prize for Psychological Sciences.

Two Faculty prizes will also be awarded for the best publications from ECRs who hold an externally funded Fellowship. Applicants will be asked to nominate whether their publication should be assessed as:

• Laboratory Sciences; or
• Non-Laboratory Sciences.

Recipients of the ECR Publication Prize will each receive $1,000*, and a certificate signed by Professor Ross Coppel, Deputy Dean and Director of Research.

Recipients may also be invited to collect their award and/or present their research at a Faculty ECR event.

Nominees will be asked to indicate if they wish to be considered to present at School and Departmental seminar programs within the Faculty.

Applicants will be notified of the submission outcome in August 2018.

* Funds will be transferred to the recipient’s School/Department for use by the ECR in research-related activities (e.g. contributing to conference accommodation/travel expenses).

SCS Early Career Research Practitioner Fellowship scheme - applications due 29 March

Applications are now open for the SCS Early-Career Clinical Practitioner Fellowship scheme.   The successful candidate will be appointed up to 0.5 FTE, Academic Level B.  

Recognising the difficult transition from PhD student to independent clinician scientist, in 2015 the School established the Early-Career Clinical Practitioner Fellowship scheme to further the aims of the School in training tomorrow’s clinical academic workforce and of consolidating Monash Health as leading academic health service. 

The Fellowships are offered on a competitive basis, to clinician scientists who have recently been awarded a PhD or MD to provide protected research time to allow them to further develop their clinical or basic science research portfolio while also undertaking clinical duties at Monash Health. 

It is envisaged that successful applicants will apply for external funding, such as through NHMRC schemes (e.g. Project Grants, Early-Career Fellowships, Career Development Fellowships, or Translational Research Fellowships) during the period of the Fellowship, such that the Fellowship acts as a bridge to independent, sustainable research funding.

Visit from Cure Cancer Australia for early career researchers

Kate Christian, Research Alumni Program Manager for Cure Cancer Australia, is coming to Monash on Monday October 2nd and is hoping to have an informal sit down with relevant early career researchers to talk through the grant opportunities available through their organisation. 

Cure Cancer Australia offers 'start up' one and two year grants in any field of cancer to early career researchers (up to 7 years post-doc or post MBBS). Funds can be used to salary support, and/or equipment and consumables.  

Attached HERE is some information about Cure Cancer's grant program and their funding priority areas.

Faculty ECR Symposium 2017 – Registrations NOW OPEN!

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (FMNHS) is hosting the biennial Early Career Researcher (ECR) Symposium on Monday 30 October 2017 at the Monash Business School (271 Collins Street, Level 7, Melbourne CBD). 

Registrations are now open and will close on Friday 15 September 2017 (or when EVENT FULL). 

Registration cost for the event is $50.  Schools and Departments have been encouraged to support the cost of attendance from their Professional Development budgets.

The 2017 ECR Symposium will be opened by Professor Christina Mitchell (Dean, FMNHS) and will comprise of seminars and workshops encompassing:

Director, Department of Infectious Diseases, The Alfred Hospital, Professor, Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Monash University.
Anton is a Professor of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, and is the Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at The Alfred Hospital and Central Clinical School, Monash University. His research interests are in hospital-acquired infections, antibiotic resistance, mechanisms of pathogenesis and infections in immunocompromised hosts. He is also an active clinician working in the area of hospital-acquired infections and transplant infectious diseases. Read more

Senior Research Officer, Team Leader, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.
Dr Marguerite Evans-Galea leads international collaborations to understand disease mechanism and develop novel therapies and biomarkers for repeat-associated neurodegenerative diseases.  The primary focus of her research program is to develop cell and gene therapies and identify therapeutic targets for Friedreich ataxia. She has received Young Investigator Awards from the Friedreich Ataxia Research Alliance, USA and the Australasian Gene and Cell Therapy Society. Read more.

2)      Informing ECRs about non-governmental grant opportunities

3)      Providing strategies for increasing publication output

Target Audience: Early Career Researchers in FNHMS 

The program will include;

· information on what makes applications competitive and how to determine if you will be competitive for a scheme

· information on how to find ECR grant opportunities

· talks from past ECR awardees

· Interactive grant workshop to provide opportunity for collaboration.

Morning tea will be provided.

The Jack Brockhoff Foundation Medical Grants - CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST (EOI)

The Jack Brockhoff Foundation invites applications for its Early Career Research Grants. Grants are worth up to AUD $70,000 each per year for one or two years. Applicants must have been engaged in full-time research for less than three years since completing their PhD.

These grants support Victorian research in health and well-being by helping to establish the careers of young scientists. They enable early-career researchers to demonstrate their scientific originality and their capacity to complete, with relative independence, a discrete study for publication in the scientific literature.

As Monash may only submit a maximum of two applications across the University (including from our affiliates), there will be an expression of interest (EOI), review, and ranking process for applications.

Intending applicants are required to prepare an EOI using the attached template HERE and submit it to the Faculty Research Office (medicine.research@monash.edu) by no later than 5:00PM (AEDT) on Monday 3 July 2017.

Applicants will be notified whether they have been selected to proceed to full application on or soon after 17 July 2017.

Final applications are due to the Jack Brockhoff Foundation by 5pm Wednesday 31 July 2017.
