Working from Home for Professional Staff

University HR confirmed that in 2022 the 3:2 model for working on-site:home will be available to our ongoing and fixed-term professional staff, where their supervisor determines this can be accommodated within the requirements of their role. 

Staff seeking this flexibility will need to complete the Working Safely from Home module and request to work from home (up to two days a week) via the application form (annually and when their role changes). Supervisors will be responsible for approving requests and will determine the suitability of their role in accordance with the Working from Home procedure. More information about flexibility in 2022 is available here.

Please reach out to your supervisor to discuss how the 3:2 hybrid model applies to your role, and visit the Flex at Monash website for more information, including forms and Q&As, to learn more about how the model will work for all of us in 2022.

Restricted store hours

Out of an abundance of caution, store hours are being restricted from now until at least Monday 10 January 2022. The only times to collect orders will be between 11.00am and midday and 3.00 to 4.00pm. 

Dry ice will be able to be sourced at any time.

Shut-down period: From 5.00pm Thursday 23 December to 8.00am Thursday 6 January.

MMC/MCH Site Alert: Northern Entry Pedestrian Safety

 

What is happening?

A number of near-miss pedestrian incidents have been reported in the Northern Entry patient transport & loading zone parking area

New signage and safety barriers have been installed across the area to define pedestrian pathways

What do I need to do?

When walking in and around our parking areas and loading zones

• walk only on the pathways provided and designated for pedestrian use
• use marked pedestrian crossings where available
• put your mobile phone away until reaching the building entry or your vehicle
• be vigilant for your safety and the safety and wellbeing of others,
• do not put yourself at risk by walking on service or access roads when pedestrian footpaths are available.

Master of Clinical Simulation & Master of Health Professions Education

SCS Education Planning Workshop

Education is moving ahead rapidly in SCS thanks to all the amazing work SCS educators have been doing during these times of uncertainty and change. To create better processes in the School to facilitate communication, collaboration and growth there is a planning afternoon for all educators in SCS to harness your thoughts and expertise to address this and answer the following questions.

• How might we better communicate governance processes?
• How might we enhance our innovations and short courses?
• How might we better support career development in education?
• How might we better conduct educational research?

The workshop will run 13 December 1.30-4.30pm.  It would be great to see everyone all in person and book a room on campus or at MMC but here is a survey to discover your preferences. New Professional Development Activity: "Write the grant you want: A practical pathway to success (Foundational & Advanced)" offered by Hudson Institute at MMC

Grant writing is a key skill in a research career, and is a great skill to develop for other careers as well.

The Hudson Institute is offering a new Monash accredited Professional Development Activity taking place in the Hudson building at MMC. This practically focussed unit will provide a new opportunity for PhD Students to develop their grant writing skills. 

The unit is broken into two parts: 

1. A 2-hour Foundational Course that will introduce the basics of grant opportunities, typical considerations for different opportunities and application process and how to develop your CV to be best placed for applications. 
2. An 8-hour Advanced course - will directly follow the foundational course for a smaller group and will be supported by experienced and highly successful mentors  who will guide participants through preparing an actual application, including how to identify the opportunity that best suits, how to prepare and how to gain and  respond to peer feedback. 

This activity aims to provide students with hands-on experience in grant writing. The first Foundational and Advanced courses will commence in November for a restricted number of applicants and will expand in 2022.

Students may either:

• Complete the Foundational workshops in the same semester (enrol for both workshops separately); OR

• November 29, 2-4pm (Convenor and Mentors help students select and plan applications)
• November 29 - December 03 (Student grant writing time. Students to send their drafts to Mentors by Nov 22, 5pm)
• December 06, 2-3pm (Application draft review 1 with Convenor and Mentors)
• December 06-09 (Students finalise their application based on Convenor and Mentor feedback)
• December 10, 11am-1pm (Students, Convenor & Mentors final review and round table discussion of application).

Academic Promotion 2021: Reminder of actions required for MNHS staff

The 2021-2022 Academic Promotions application due date for SCS is Wednesday 17 November 2021. For all school application due dates see here.

As you prepare your application, you must take the following actions:

• Step 1: Request a meeting with Prof Ross Coppel or Prof Ian Smyth

If you have not already done so, please fill out this form to request a meeting as soon as possible to discuss your case for promotion. 

Due to capacity issues, late applicants may not be able to be accommodated.  

• Step 2: Request supporting documents from HR Academic Promotions team

The HR Academic Promotions team is now running Research Achievement Records and Research Performance Reports.  These documents are official parts of your application that you must obtain prior to submission.  The HR Academic Promotions team will only generate these documents once, so it imperative that you ensure all your data is up to date and correct before requesting the reports.   Please email hr.academic-promotion@monash.edu to request the documents.

Please use your myPerformance Dashboard to ensure your research data is correct.  The Research Activity Guide provides all the information you need to make any necessary updates and corrections.

• Step 3: Request Summative Peer Review of Teaching and Student Evaluation Report (Teaching & Research applicants only)

Ensure you have a Summative Peer Review of Teaching report from 2021. You can request a review and access your report via the Monash Learning and Teaching Peer Review website.

Student Evaluation Records need to be requested via the University Planning and Statistics Google Form before Friday 19 November.

In addition to defining uncertainty tolerance and its role in wellbeing and career success, this session will highlight evidenced-based:

• Practical and purposeful teaching practices educators can foster (or hinder) students’ uncertainty tolerance in a unit/course/curriculum
• Impacts on short-term, and long-term student outcomes (i.e. responses to uncertainties)
• Considerations when designing curriculum inculcated with uncertainty/ambiguities/ unknowns/complexities

A/Prof Michelle Lazarus serves as the Director of the Monash Centre for Human Anatomy Education (CHAE) within the Biomedical Discovery Institute. Additionally, she is the Curriculum Integration Network lead within the Monash Centre Scholarship in Health Education (MCSHE) as well as a Monash Education Academy Fellow, anatomy education discipline lead within the medical curriculum, and a core member of the General Surgical Science Examination Board for Royal Australian College of Surgeons. Her recent work explores the role of uncertainty within healthcare science education, challenging A/Prof’s Lazarus’s own tolerance of uncertainty (an academic irony).

SCS Friday Catch Up Drinks and Trivia – A Night to remember

What a hoot it was at the recent SCS Friday Drinks and Trivia Night, hosted by Quiz Master, Eugene Fredericks (yep, that’s our School Manager in a pink suit doing his night job thing).   A total of 13 teams with 63 participants (not to mention some partners and kids in the background) took up the challenge with a drink in hand to pit their smarts against each other to vie for the SCS Trivia Champion title.

Eugene posed a myriad of visual and sound questions over 5 rounds covering music, geography, literature, pop culture, movies, tv shows, art, etc etc, like these ones below – have a go yourself!

After an intense, but fun one-and-a-half hours, We’re going nutty* took out FIRST PLACE at 85 points beating GILZ-Pilz Cure your Illz and The Barkers who tied for second at 82 points.  The Savage Cabbages managed to stomp in at 4th place, hedging over The Cognitive Deficits; Jin’s Jedis; Nurse Ratched’s Henchmen; The Dream Team; Dr Brian Astrid-Eddi; The Happy Demons; Quizly Tiny Brains;  Katto and Gwennie’s Gurus.  (REFER TO SCOREBOARD)

*Note: For the purpose of bragging rights, the winning team We’re Going Nutty are from the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics & Food: Tracy McCaffrey (Captain), Evelyn Volders, Maxine Bonham and Andrea Bryce.

University staff vaccination status for renewing Authorised Worker Permits

All Monash University Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences staff with Authorised Worker permits received an e-mail from Monash HR on 12 October 2021, and we draw your attention to the urgent and important requirement for you to show evidence of your vaccination status by 15 October (Friday) so that you can continue to work onsite at a Monash University Site or healthcare facility.  

Your permit will be invalid from 15 October 2021 until you provide evidence of your vaccination status through Monash’s Vaccinate Monash form.

As outlined by the Chief Human Resources Officer, Monash Authorised Workers must provide evidence of their vaccination status through Monash’s Vaccinate Monash form before 15 October. You will no longer be authorised to attend work with your permit if you do not comply with these requirements and confirm your COVID-19 vaccination status.

MNHS Authorised Workers working in healthcare facilities

Additionally, the Victorian Chief Health Officer has released a direction on mandatory vaccination for healthcare workers outlining clear requirements for COVID-19 vaccination for all staff that enter a Victorian Health Service site from 15 October. 

If you do not meet these requirements you will not be able to attend a healthcare facility from 15 October 2021.  To access healthcare sites, you will need to follow the instructions of your healthcare site regarding providing evidence of your vaccination status for their systems, as well as submitting your proof of vaccination to the University. 

Monash staff without an Authorised Worker Permit

All other staff are working from home until 5 November, or when the state reaches 80% double vaccination, and will receive further information about  providing evidence of their vaccination status in line with Victoria’s Roadmap and with the University’s Roadmap to Reactivation.

Information for Hudson staff who receive this message:

1. Hudson Institute has issued Authorised Worker Permits to its staff. Staff with Hudson-issued permits should follow the instructions of Hudson.
2. There are a number of Hudson staff who hold fractional paid appointments at the University. In this case, as the University needs to capture information for all of the staff on its payroll, your assistance in submitting this information to cover your University appointment is required, please. 

EASB 1st Virtual International Scientific Conference

The Endometriosis Adenomyosis Society of Bangladesh (EASB) will be convening its 1st Virtual International Scientific Conference on 15-16 October 2021. 

The conference will be held during Bangladesh Standard Time (5 hrs behind AEDT).

Expression of Interest – Casual Research Support Officer Department of Surgery

Professor Yahya Shehabi is seeking expressions of interest for a Casual Research Support Officer to join his research group in the Department of Surgery involved in intensive care unit trials. The role will involve helping with screening, consent, randomisation, data collection, and training staff on trials processes.

Experience in a previous research support or co-ordinator role is required. Research experience in an Intensive Care Unit is desirable. The precise hours are negotiable, with an estimation of approximately 24 – 30 hours per week required. Initially, Professor Shehabi is seeking the position for the next 12 months.

Australian Museum Eureka Science Prizes 2021 NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN

Nominations for the Australian Museum Eureka Science Prizes 2021 are now open and close on Friday 28 May at 7pm (AEST).

These $10,000 prizes are highly prestigious and recognise excellence across science and innovation disciplines.  Further information is available here. 

Researchers who identify as exceptional candidates working in research programs that align with the categories listed below are encouraged to contact their Head of School & School Research Manager to discuss their suitability to apply. Applicants may submit themselves (self-nominate).  A Pure record is not required.

Candidates will need to address the application requirements specific to each Prize (age eligibility has been noted above, but additional eligibility criteria apply). Please note: many of the categories require the applicant to provide 2-3 assessor reports responding to the judging criteria using a provided template. Assessors must be familiar with the activity, but cannot be either personally or directly involved in it. Identifying the availability of suitable Assessors should be a priority. Most applications require between 6 and 12 pages of prepared text, including the independent referee assessments.

Unfortunately proposal support from the MRO Research Development team will not be available this round. Applicants are encouraged to draw upon their network of supervisors, mentors and peers to prepare an application that speaks to a general scientific audience.
