Professor Benjamin Kile is Head of the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology, Monash University. An NHMRC Principal Research Fellow, Ben trained at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI), where he obtained his PhD in 2001. After postdoctoral studies with Professor Monica Justice at Baylor College of Medicine in the USA, he returned to WEHI in 2004, establishing an independent research group in 2008. Professor Kile’s research achievements have been recognised with a number of awards and prizes, including the 2010 Australian Federal Governments Science Minister’s Prize for Life Scientists of the Year, and the Gottschalk Medal of the Australian Academy of Science.

In this one-day interactive course, participants from both academic and journalism backgrounds will work together to identify important barriers in communication of health research to the general public. The paradigm of evidence-based medicine and how it can be used to enhance reporting will be highlighted, using recent case studies of optimal and imbalanced reporting. Small group sessions will engage journalists in tasks designed to explore evidence based approaches to reporting, while researchers and academics will cover tips for better engagement with media such as how to stay on message, avoid being misquoted and steer away from difficult areas. Mock interviews of academics by a prominent health journalist will be staged to demonstrate useful media techniques, and safe and effective use of social media tools to convey your message will also be discussed.

Synopsis: Inadvertently injurious ventilation in the delivery room causes brain injury in preterm babies. This project aims to provide insight into the mechanisms of ventilation-induced brain injury and to evaluate the therapeutic benefits of existing treatments that target these pathways of injury.

Presentation title: The possibility of changing the health of two generations overnight: Investigating the impact of sleep during pregnancy on gestational weight gain, glucose tolerance, and child birth weight

Synopsis: Sleep is a strong and independent risk factor for obesity in both children and adults. However, despite sleep disturbances being commonly experienced in the pregnant population, the role of sleep and the relationship to weight and glucose tolerance is currently unknown. Therefore, by better understanding the role of sleep in pregnancy we may be able to influence the health of mothers and their babies.

"Exploring a new frontier: The immune and coagulation systems of the premature infant and their relevance in major diseases of prematurity"

Synopsis: Extremely premature infants are prone to a unique set of diseases including bronchopulmonary dysplaisa (BPD). This seminar will present findings based on a cohort of 51 infants on postnatal T cell development as well as T cell polarisation and its association with BPD.

MMI-MHTP Image Analysis Workshop, 6 September

This workshop will be catered to the advanced analysis needs of those who register. If only a few people register for this workshop we will offer it as specialised one on one training for your specific analysis at a suitable time instead of a joint workshop. 

Cost: $50 – which will be covered by the MMI registration fee for platform users. Non-MMI users must provide a cost centre when registering.
