Academic promotion 2022: MNHS internal processes & planning

It is time to start thinking about the 2022 Academic Promotions round. If you are planning to apply for promotion to Level C, D or E this round, it is time to begin preparing your application.

Please note that the University has yet to finalise the promotion documents for the next round, however, the general structure of the application will remain mostly unchanged.  The 2022 Academic Promotions timeline has not yet been finalised, but applicants should start planning to work on their applications over the next 3 months. 

Further details about information sessions, and university processes will follow on when the round dates are confirmed.

In the meantime, please follow these instructions to get started, noting the specific tasks you must carry out based on your contract type:

Research Only and Teaching & Research Staff

1. Let the MNHS Faculty Research Office know that you intend to apply by emailing medicine.research@monash.edu. We will inform you of your promotion reference period, i.e. the period of activity that will be considered in your application and metrics report. This is usually 3-5 years, depending on your last promotion.  If you have an unusual or complex case, we will refer you to the HR Academic Promotions team. 
2. Request a meeting with Prof James Whisstock, Deputy Dean Research (Level D and E applicants) or Prof Ian Smyth, Associate Dean, Research and Research Infrastructure (Level C applicants) to discuss your case for promotion.  This is highly recommended for all RO and T&R applicants in MNHS. You can discuss your metrics, draft application, and any questions you have about the assessment process at the meeting.   James and Ian will begin meeting with candidates in September.   Please complete this form to request a meeting as soon as possible. 
3. Check your metrics and research activity data via the myPerformance Dashboard. Once your reference period is confirmed, use your myPerformance Dashboard to evaluate your metrics against the MNHS Academic Performance Standards.  You can also use the Dashboard to see if you need to update or correct any of your research activity data in Pure, including grant applications and awards, research income, outputs, and HDR supervision data.  It is your responsibility to ensure your data is correct and up to date. 
4. Make any necessary updates to your research activity data using the Research Activity Guide. This guide provides the contact details for the central teams that manage your data. You can get in touch with these teams directly to request any changes that need to be made.  It may take several weeks for changes to be made, so you should start this process as soon as possible.
5. Update your public profiles.  Make your Google Scholar profile public.  If you have multiple Scopus profiles, please merge them.

Education Focused and Teaching & Research Staff

1. Ensure you have a Summative Peer Review of Teaching report from 2022. You can find out more about how to request a review on the Monash Learning and Teaching Peer Review website.
2. Request your Student Evaluation Record from University Planning and Statistics via their online Google Form.
3. Request a meeting with Prof Wayne Hodgson, Deputy Dean Education, to discuss your education case for promotion. You should bring a draft of your education case to the meeting. Please email Karen Johnson, Prof. Hodgson’s EA, to request a meeting.

Additional resources are available for Education Focused and Teaching & Research staff to help them draft their application. This includes the Monash Education Academy’s Moodle site of resources to help applicants construct an evidence-based education case in their application. The Moodle site can be accessed any time.

The 2020/2021 Academic Promotions round will be open for applications between 5 October - 13 November 2020.  If you are planning on applying for promotion this year, it is time to begin the pre-promotion process.  Please follow the instructions below to get started:

Information sessions for fixed-term and continuing academic staff who are interested in applying for academic promotion have been scheduled for September.

• 21 September, 2:00 - 3:30 PM: Basic Research session
• 24 September, 1:00-2:30 PM: Clinical Research session

Suzanne Miller promoted to Professor

Prof Suzanne Miller

Congratulations to Suzanne Miller on her recent academic promotion to full Professor.  Professor Miller is a NHMRC Senior Research Fellow, Deputy Director of The Ritchie Centre where she leads the Neurodevelopment Theme.

Academic Promotion – round open

The Academic Promotion round is now open. If you have not already done so, please make the necessary arrangements with your performance supervisor and Head of Unit (equivalent to Head of School), ensuring that they have adequate time to complete their section in the Case for Promotion form.

Renowned IVF specialist promoted to Professor

Professor Beverley Vollenhoven

Congratulations Professor Beverley Vollenhoven who received an academic promotion last week.

Head of Gynaecology at Monash Health and Deputy Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash University, Professor Vollenhoven is a specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

Professor Vollenhoven’s early research focussed on the cause and treatment of uterine fibroids, and she discovered factors that contribute to their growth and development.   Her more recent research centres on fertility and menopause.

“One of the main reasons why IVF fails is that embryos fails to implant, and some of my basic research is looking at implantation—why some embryos implant and others don’t,” said Professor Vollenhoven.

“I’m also investigating how we can improve the quality and quantity of eggs produced by older women.”

Professor Vollenhoven’s other research interests include looking at women using alternative therapies in menopause and IVF.

Professor Vollenhoven has more than 100 publications in journals and books. She has previously been a Chairperson of the Victorian Regional Committee of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and is a member of the Examinations Committee.

She is currently an examiner for both the specialist and sub specialist exams and a senior examiner for the Australian Medical Council.  She is on the Advisory Committee for Prescription Medicines (a subcommittee of the Therapeutic Goods Administration) and is a member of 11 national and international societies.

She is chair on the Women in Medicine and Science committee at SCS and is the Faculty representative of the Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team (SAT).

“Personally and professionally, this promotion recognises effort and hard work not only by me but by those who have worked with and supported me, including my family,” she said.

Professor Vollenhoven acknowledges the tremendous support of Professors Euan Wallace and Eric Morand. 

Stroke and Ageing Research Group Head promoted

Professor Srikanth

Congratulations Professor Velandai Srikanth who received an academic promotion last week.

A specialist senior geriatrician within Neurosciences at Monash Health, Professor Srikanth has extensive clinical expertise in stroke and cognitive disorders.

As an established Clinical Academic, Professor Srikanth has developed and now leads the multifaceted Stroke and Ageing Research (STAR) group in Medicine, Schoolof Clinical Sciences at Monash Health (SCS) within the Monash HealthTranslation Precinct (MHTP). He also leads the stroke sub-theme within Neurosciences/Mental Health in the Academic Health Science Centre, MonashPartners.

Professor Srikanth holds a co-funded fellowship from the NHMRC Career Development program and the Heart Foundation Future Leader Program and is the recipient of eight NHMRC project grants.

An important focus of Professor Srikanth’s current work is unravelling the relationship between metabolic health (diabetes, insulin resistance, glycation) and dementia.

“Diabetes and dementia are both very large public health problems, and the research we are conducting here at the MHTP is at the forefront of efforts aimed at understanding why diabetes increases the risk of dementia,” said Professor Srikanth.

“This will hopefully lead to alternative ways to reduce the burden of dementia in older people.”

Other areas of Professor Srikanth’s research include cerebral small vessel disease and its clinical effects on people, and mechanisms of brain ageing syndromes (dementia, gait disturbances, falls) related to cerebrovascular disease.

Professor Srikanth collaborates actively with basic researchers in the study of immune factors involved in acute stroke, novel health service delivery systems for patients with stroke and TIA, global health in stroke and stroke risk factors in developing countries, involving collaborations with several national and international groups.

Professor Srikanth is also actively clinically involved in enabling the efficient transition of acute stroke patients to the sub-acute setting, the multidisciplinary management of complex post-stroke complications, and conducting outpatient clinics for stroke, TIA and cognitive disorders.

“Professor Srikanth’s promotion is richly deserved—he was recruited to Monash University by a former Vice Chancellor, Professor Ed Byrne who obviously had an eye for spotting exceptional academic ability,” said Head of Department of Medicine Professor Peter Ebeling AO.

Professor Ebeling said he is very proud of Professor Srikanth and his group’s huge contributions to the success of his Department and the School.

“It is also personally gratifying for me to note the direct health benefits flowing from the research group’s interventions in the developing world in India,” added Professor Ebeling.

Following information presented at the last School Meeting, academic staff are reminded that applications for academic promotions are currently open. 

There have been some changes made to the procedure this year, outlined in the attached document 'Academic Promotion 2015'.

Further to the announcement in the Monash Memo that the Academic Promotion Round is now open, here is some further information for staff intending to apply this year.

If you have not already done so, please make the necessary arrangements with your performance supervisor and Head of Unit, ensuring that they have adequate time to complete their sections of the Case for Promotion form by the due date.

You are strongly encouraged to make an appointment to meet with the relevant Associate Deans to discuss your application.

Academic Promotion Information

The key dates for this year's academic promotion round have now been set. 

The promotion round for applications to Levels C to E will be Monday 4 May to Friday 26 June 2015.  In order to help prospective candidates prepare their application, a series of Information Sessions will be conducted across Faculties and campuses throughout mid-to-late March.
