Head, Department of Surgery at the School of Clinical Sciences at
Monash Health Professor Julian Smith was recently recognised for his
contribution to surgical education when inducted as a member of the new
American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academy of Master Surgeon Educators™.
One of only 91 esteemed surgeons from seven countries, Professor
Smith, who is also Head, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Monash Health,
was selected into membership at the prestigious Academy’s first induction
ceremony in Chicago on 3 October 2018.
Beyond his educational roles as Professor of Surgery at Monash
University, Professor Smith has held multiple leadership positions pertaining
to Cardiothoracic Surgery education and training at the Royal Australasian
College of Surgeons. He has also edited three surgical
textbooks and published a spectrum of papers on surgical education research.
Professor Smith said this American award represents
a significant international endorsement of his contribution to and leadership
in undergraduate surgical teaching and postgraduate surgical training over many
years.
“My membership of the Academy will
facilitate international collaborations across all domains of surgical education
to ensure that Monash University remains at the cutting edge of surgical
teaching for our medical students,” Professor Smith said.
“It will also ensure the Royal Australasian
College of Surgeons provides international best practice with respect to the
education and training of surgeons.”
Professor Smith is also a Member of the
Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Academy of Surgical Educators and a
Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of
Edinburgh.
