PhD scholarship opportunity in prevention of diabetes and chronic diseases at the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation (MCHRI), School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University

We are seeking talented medical candidates who wish to apply for a full-time scholarship to pursue a PhD. You should ideally have a background in diabetes or general medicine and an interest in the prevention of chronic diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

About this PhD opportunity

The candidate will have an opportunity to learn how to plan and run a clinic trial, learn how to perform clinical research procedures such as glucose clamps, muscle and adipose tissue biopsies, measure central blood pressure, arterial stiffness and endothelial function, perform a systematic review, epidemiological modeling and health economic analyses. Within this research program, there is ample opportunity for the candidate to conduct independent research under the supervision of an expert research team.

Candidate Requirements

·         A first class or 2A honours degree, MD, MBBS or equivalent;

·         Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency;

·         A candidate whose first language is not English should have a minimum IELTS score of 7, with no band below 6.5

Students with H1 equivalent are encouraged to apply for scholarship. An initial, one year scholarship (equivalent to Australian Postgraduate Association stipend) for 2017 is guaranteed, with opportunities to apply for further scholarships in subsequent years.  Preparation of scholarship applications will be supported and successful applicants will be eligible to apply for additional local top-up scholarship funds.

Remuneration: 

Commensurate with NHMRC PhD stipend (tax exempt), plus support for attendance at approved courses.

PhD Scholarship at Monash Lung & Sleep

Monash Lung & Sleep Institute offers three PhD Scholarships for 2017-2018.

PhD and ECR Poster Program - Win a Travel Scholarship

As part of the MIME Medtech Industry Innovators Day on Thursday 23 June, PhD and ECR are invited to submit posters on research areas in the medtech or health ICT space. The posters will be displayed in New Horizons, Clayton campus in rooms 4.07 and 4.08 throughout the day. 

The MIME Medtech Industry Innovators Day is fully subscribed with 140 attendees expected throughout the day including over 70 external guests from industry and government. Guests will be able to peruse the posters throughout the day with a specific time set aside during their lunch break from 12.15pm - 1.00pm for students to man their posters and be available for a Q&A session. PhD Scholar Opportunities - Department of Psychiatry

Expressions of Interest are sought from outstanding candidates to undertake PhD studies in the Department of Psychiatry at Monash University in the field of epidemiology.

The Project is a longitudinal population study of child development to identify risk and protective factors for mental health and other outcomes.

The PhD research will be based on a large cohort of NSW children (~87,000), currently aged 12 years, for whom there is cross-sectional survey data obtained at ages 5 and 11, and linked administrative data from several government agencies for both the children and their parents spanning the period from each child's birth to age 11. Menzies Foundation Allied Health PhD Scholarship – Applications Open

The Menzies Foundation is looking for outstanding researchers with potential to be the next generation of leaders in Allied Health.

The tax-free scholarship is offered over one or two years at $40,000 per year with a total value of up to $80,000.  It is open to outstanding Allied Health researchers studying at an Australian university who have completed the first stage of their PhD.

To be eligible, applicants must be researching in one of the following non-medical evidence-based allied health disciplines:

·    audiology, dietetics, exercise physiology, nutrition, occupational therapy, optometry, orthoptics, physiotherapy, podiatry, psychology, social work, and speech pathology

We are looking for applicants who not only demonstrate academic excellence, but who are future leaders. We expect our applicants will represent the Menzies’ ethos of being the best you can be, no matter where you start; taking risks, inspiring others and being willing to work hard. In addition, we’re looking for researchers who are likely to make a contribution to the further development of the allied health sciences in Australia and who will use their leadership, knowledge and skills for the benefit of others.

The global relevance of basic anthropometric and food intake measures for nutrition screening in a rapidly industrialized society: from under to over nutrition in Chinese children

Nearly all large epidemiological studies rely on interpretation of basic anthropometric measures (weight, height and waist circumferences) as determinants of growth during childhood. In China today both under and over nutrition co-exist on a scale that is unprecedented. The rapid industrialisation in China has generated an equally rapid change in the food supply in both quantity and variety. Food intake obviously impacts on growth and this project will examine the relationship between food patterns, physical activity and growth over time in early childhood. These project goals will be realized by secondary data analysis of several large Chinese birth cohorts (50,000 – 100,000 subjects). It will be undertaken in collaboration with leading researchers in China. Applicants should have a particular interest and confidence in working with large datasets. This PhD will enable skill development in nutritional epidemiology. Opportunities to spend some periods of time in China exist within this project. 

Alcohol: The forgotten component of energy intake

Consumption of alcoholic beverages has a unique place in Australia, but with the rise in obesity, the contribution of alcohol to energy intake is under greater scrutiny. Alcohol contributes more energy per gram than protein and carbohydrate. As such alcohol attains public health importance solely as a discretionary energy source with low micro-nutrient value. Consumption of alcoholic beverages has a short term stimulatory effect on appetite and desire to eat. These physiological processes combined with the food supplied in social situations, which are often high fat snack foods, contribute to passive over consumption of energy per se. This project seeks to develop and test food (snack) solutions to reduce the energy availability and increase energy utilization of snacks by altering macronutrient composition. It will test their effectiveness when consumed with alcohol in controlled trials. The long term outcome will be increasing the evidence base for guidelines around which foods can be served with alcoholic beverages that optimize energy utilization and reduce the stimulatory effect on appetite.

$500,000 seed funding and 6 PhD scholarships now available at MIME - call to ALL clinicians

The Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME) fosters stronger collaborations between clinical researchers in Monash partner hospitals and engineering and IT researchers.  Our aim is to develop new medical technologies that address significant unmet clinical needs.

Two funding sources are now available from MIME to support collaborative research projects involving a clinician researcher from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and a researcher from the Faculty of Engineering or IT:

(i) MIME seed fund - between $10,000 and $50,000 for collaborative projects delivering an outcome in 12-18 months

(ii) MIME PhD scholarships - for jointly supervised projects

PLEASE NOTE: the MIME Affinity meeting scheduled for this Thursday 18 June at MMC has been postponed.  It will be rescheduled after expressions of interest for projects have been received.

We are asking clinicians to nominate areas of clinical need / opportunity via this form by 29 June.

Selected clinical areas will be advertised on the MIME website on Monday 6 July.

In July, engineering, IT and other researchers will be invited to respond to these areas of clinical need with a proposed technical solution - applications will close 31 July. 

In August, MIME will assist with the optimisation of final joint proposals. Announcement of successful applicants on 28 August.

PhD Scholarship Opportunity

Identifying pathways for new treatment strategies for children with primary snoring

The Opportunity:

The Infant and Child Health Theme within the Ritchie Centre is offering a full-time PhD scholarship, tenable from July 2015.

This scholarship is being offered as part of a Sleep Research Society Foundation (USA) Early Career Development Research Award investigating learning potential in children with sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and further exploring the mechanisms involved in nocturnal respiratory disturbance and daytime functioning in children. The research will include:

·         monitoring of regular sleep/wake patterns via actigraphy,

·         conducting ambulatory overnight sleep studies in the child’s home,

·         administration of validated psychometric testing including the Weschler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence and the Wide Range Assessment of Memory and Learning

·         assessment of validated parent-reported behavioural questionnaires such as the Child Behavior
