2018 MIME Seed Fund round and Affinity Meeting, 5 June

Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME) is preparing to launch its annual seed fund. The 2018 MIME Seed Fund will be initiated through a series of affinity meetings with our partner hospitals.

The 2018 round of the MIME Seed Fund is designed to build on the collaborative framework of MIME established in recent years. There will be up to $500,000 available in the 2018 funding round. Applications may request up to $50,000 per project for medtech collaborative projects involving a MNHS clinician researcher and a Monash engineering or IT researcher. Cardiac themed proposals will be highly regarded and may attract a higher level of funding. Successful applicants of the 2016 MIME Seed Fund round are also invited to apply for top up funding as part of the 2018 Seed Fund round.

The funding will be directed to projects that can achieve a meaningful outcome within 12-18 months, e.g. proof-of-concept data or initial prototype. The seed funding is aimed at progressing a project to the point that the research team is well positioned to then secure external funding from industry or grants to progress the next phase of the R&D.

Like the previous rounds of the MIME Seed Fund, there will be two stages to the application process: an initial call to clinicians to define areas of unmet clinical need, followed by an invitation to all Monash staff to respond with proposed solutions. All Monash staff are eligible to participate in the multidisciplinary ‘solution' teams. Researchers from MIME partner institutions are also invited to participate as members of the collaborative teams.

PhD and ECR Poster Program - Win a Travel Scholarship

As part of the MIME Medtech Industry Innovators Day on Thursday 23 June, PhD and ECR are invited to submit posters on research areas in the medtech or health ICT space. The posters will be displayed in New Horizons, Clayton campus in rooms 4.07 and 4.08 throughout the day. 

The MIME Medtech Industry Innovators Day is fully subscribed with 140 attendees expected throughout the day including over 70 external guests from industry and government. Guests will be able to peruse the posters throughout the day with a specific time set aside during their lunch break from 12.15pm - 1.00pm for students to man their posters and be available for a Q&A session. Two travel scholarships worth $2,500 each will be awarded to the two most successful posters. See more details here.

MIME MHTP Affinity Meeting, 20 April 2-4pm

2015 MIME travel grants

The Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME) has a number of travel scholarships available for PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and early career researchers working on projects that involve medical technologies. By medical technologies we mean a treatment or device to treat a medical condition, a diagnostic tool or IT system or approach directed towards improvement in clinical outcomes.

This funding, up to $2500, is to cover some of the costs towards:

i. International conference attendance in concert with visits to key groups for further learning, career development and to establish networks and collaborations with high profile international research groups, or

ii. Travel for new collaborative work or continue existing collaborations with key international research groups.

The travel should be carried out within the next 12 months, i.e. by 31st July 2016. Applications can be submitted electronically via the seed fund tab on the MIME website or via the MIME Travel Grants Google Form. The closing date for applications is 31st August 2015.

$500,000 seed funding and 6 PhD scholarships now available at MIME - call to ALL clinicians

The Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME) fosters stronger collaborations between clinical researchers in Monash partner hospitals and engineering and IT researchers.  Our aim is to develop new medical technologies that address significant unmet clinical needs.

Two funding sources are now available from MIME to support collaborative research projects involving a clinician researcher from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and a researcher from the Faculty of Engineering or IT:

(i) MIME seed fund - between $10,000 and $50,000 for collaborative projects delivering an outcome in 12-18 months

(ii) MIME PhD scholarships - for jointly supervised projects

PLEASE NOTE: the MIME Affinity meeting scheduled for this Thursday 18 June at MMC has been postponed.  It will be rescheduled after expressions of interest for projects have been received.

We are asking clinicians to nominate areas of clinical need / opportunity via this form by 29 June.

Selected clinical areas will be advertised on the MIME website on Monday 6 July.

In July, engineering, IT and other researchers will be invited to respond to these areas of clinical need with a proposed technical solution - applications will close 31 July. 

In August, MIME will assist with the optimisation of final joint proposals. Announcement of successful applicants on 28 August.

New Institute to improve health through development of medical technology

MIME Director, Professor Rosenfeld

A generous scholarship funded by Monash Health will help enable important biomedical research at a new and unique collaboration, the Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME).

Established to forge stronger research partnerships between clinicians and engineering, IT, scientific and biomedical researchers, the collaborative translational research at MIME is specifically directed at improving human health.

The Monash Health Foundation has given $75,000 towards funding two PhD scholarships at MIME; with additional contributions by the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health and the Faculties of Engineering and IT at Monash University, a total of six MIME PhD scholarships will be available at the Monash Health Translation Precinct (MHTP).

This is an exciting opportunity for postgraduate students to embark on a cross-disciplinary PhD to develop new medical technology within a dynamic and supportive research environment, MIME Director and renowned neurosurgeon Professor Jeffrey V. Rosenfeld said.

"MIME is very appreciative of the support from the Monash Health Foundation and the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health to establish these scholarships," added Professor Rosenfeld.
