Seeking children 5 - 10 years to participate in sleep research

The Ritchie Centre (TRC) is looking  for  children  between  the ages of  5  and  10  years to participate as a control group in research sleep studies.

The TRC is carrying out studies on the effect of breathing difficulties at night on learning and behaviour. We are looking for non-snoring 5-10 year old volunteers to serve as a comparison group to the children with sleep disordered breathing.

Children who participate will be asked to wear a watch-like device for one week to assess their usual sleep patterns. They will also participate in a learning and memory assessment and have an overnight sleep study ALL CONDUCTED IN YOUR OWN HOME. There will be no need to come into the laboratory. We will come to you.

What do you get  out of it? We will provide you with a full report of your child’s behaviour, learning and memory assessments so that you can see how they are developing in relation to their peers. We will also provide you with the report of the sleep study if you are interested.

The results from this study will determine if learning potential is intact in children with sleep disordered breathing and will provide new information regarding potential new non-surgical treatment strategies.

For further information please contact: Dr Sarah Biggs, The Ritchie Centre Phone: 9594 4759 Email: sarah.biggs@monash.edu

Anxiety and/or Depression and the experiences of Buddhism

Michael Ellem, is conducting a research project as part of a Master of Mental Health Science Degree, 1st Semester 2016, through Monash University.

The research project will be investigating two things:

1. Meanings of Buddhist meditation, mindfulness and spiritual practices for Buddhist practitioners with either a self- diagnosis or a clinical diagnosis of Anxiety and/or Depression.

2. The influence and dynamics of Buddhist meditation, mindfulness and spiritual practices on study participants.

It is envisaged that the researcher will undertake 3 interviews (open and semi- structured) with prospective participants (interviews will need to be audio-recorded) during the early part of 2016.

Participation in all stages of the project is entirely voluntary. This project is supervised by senior researchers in the University, we hope it will assist in developing understandings and meanings of mental health issues as they unfold for Buddhist practitioners in Australia.

If you are interested in participating in the study or desire further information

Participants sought : Zonulin study to measure gut 'leakiness'

Zonulin is a protein involved in gut leakiness. It is measured in different groups with gastrointestinal dysfunction (e.g. NCGS, CD, IBD) as well as in normal healthy individuals.

50 normal healthy participants are needed for the analysis. We need to collect 2 tubes of blood (approx. 17.5 mL) after refraining from eating gluten for at least 3 hours. It would be ideal to collect blood under fasting conditions (i.e. overnight fast, collection upon arrival at work), though a morning coffee or tea should be fine.

Selection criteria:
1. You are in a good state of health with no pre-existing diagnoses of gastrointestinal disease or abnormalities, liver disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders.
2. You do not have evidence of ongoing, active infection and your immune system is healthy.
3. You are between the ages of 18 and 65.
4. You do not believe that you have a sensitivity to gluten and are not on a gluten-free diet.
5. You are capable of refraining from the consumption of gluten for three hours prior to a blood test.

Seeking children/teens between 3 and 18 years for sleep research

The Ritchie Centre (TRC) is looking for children/teens between the ages of 3 and 18 years to participate as controls in research sleep studies.

The Centre is carrying out studies on the effect of sleep disordered breathing on blood flow to the brain and its relationship with learning and behaviour. We are looking for non snoring 3–12 year old volunteers to serve as controls. Participants will have an overnight sleep study at the Melbourne Children’s Sleep Centre in the Monash Medical Centre.
We are also looking for 8–18 year old non snoring, normal-weight volunteers to serve as controls in another study on the effects of being overweight in childhood and snoring during sleep on brain structure, academic performance and the cardiovascular system. The participants will firstly have an MRI scan at the brand new Monash BioImaging Facility located in Wellington Road opposite Monash University Clayton Campus. This will take about an hour and afterwards have an overnight sleep study at the Melbourne Children’s Sleep Centre in the Monash Medical Centre. Both of these procedures will be performed on the same night.

Children/teenagers required for sleep research study

During the sleep study, leads will be attached to measure brain activity, breathing and heart rate whilst the participants sleep. None of these measurements hurt the participants in any way and they will be able to see what their brains are doing! Sleep studies are overnight from 7:00pm and there are facilities for making tea and coffee and watching DVDs. A parent is required to stay and sleep overnight, and staff and students will explain everything about sleep to you. After the study a friendly psychologist will arrange a time to visit your house for some fun psychological testing. Being poor researchers, the only thing that can be offered in return for participation is free parking and gratitude.
For further information please contact: Professor Rosemary Horne, The Ritchie Centre Phone: 9594 5100  Email: rosemary.horne@monash.edu

LOOKING FOR CHILDREN BORN PRETERM AGED BETWEEN 8-12 YEARS OLD TO PARTICIPATE IN A RESEARCH SLEEP STUDY

The Ritchie Centre is carrying out studies to determine the long-term effects of preterm birth and fetal growth restriction on cardiovascular control and function in children aged between 8 and 12 years. We are looking for volunteers of children who were born preterm (between 25 and 34 weeks gestation) with an appropriate birth weight for their gestational age. The participants will firstly have an ultrasound of their heart at Monash Heart, which will take about 30 minutes and then an overnight sleep study at the Melbourne Children’s Sleep Centre, located at Monash Medical Centre. Both of these procedures will be performed on the same night. During the sleep study, we will attach leads to measure brain activity, breathing, heart rate and blood pressure whilst the participants sleep overnight. These measures are all non-invasive and will not hurt the participants in any way. Sleep studies are overnight from 7:00pm and there are facilities for making tea and coffee and watching DVDs. A parent is required to stay and sleep overnight, and our staff and students will explain everything about sleep to you. Being poor researchers we can only offer free parking and our gratitude for participation!
