Year 2 medical students present research at international conferences

Kunal Sehgal with Professor Steve Abman,
Director, Pediatric Heart
Lung Center, University of Colorado
Monash University year 2 medical students, Kartik Sehgal and Kunal Sehgal, have presented their research findings at the recent Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand Annual Meeting on the Gold Coast in March, and at the Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting (PAS) in Baltimore, Maryland this month.

PAS brings together paediatricians, researchers, academics and other health care providers from around the world seeking to improve the health and wellbeing of children worldwide.

Kartik and Kunal's research, under the supervision of Associate Professor Kenneth Tan, Neonatologist at Monash Children's Hospital, was undertaken at Monash Newborn on 412 preterm infants. Their research noted a high incidence of fetal growth restriction, which was strongly associated with poor respiratory outcomes such as higher incidence of chronic lung disease and discharge home with oxygen, and a longer duration of need for respiratory support while in-patients.

Kartik and Kunal say they are grateful to Associate Professor Tan for his supervision and for the opportunity to learn and interact with researchers from various disciplines.
