I am pleased to welcome Kelly Adlington to the School Research Office to the newly created position of Senior Clinical Trial Coordinator

Kelly is currently finishing a PhD in Medical research and joins our team from the Murdoch Children's Research Institute. She has a research background where she focussed on determining the effect of α-actinin 3 deficiency on the regulation of skeletal muscle mass and response to androgens.

With Kelly joining the team there will be an important change in commercially sponsored clinical trial workflow in the School Research Office. Please direct all questions to the clinical trial role account (scs-research1@monash.edu) so that with Kelly or I can respond to you in a timely manner.

Science and Industry Endowment Fund – Australian Academy of Science Fellowships to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings

A SIEA - AAS Fellowship is provided to ECR applicants that demonstrate a strong commitment to their principal field of studies, that is in physiology and medical sciences related disciplines, and to interdisciplinary work, for example by double degrees or interdisciplinary projects. 

The registration fee for the 2023 meeting is €2,500 (EUR) per attendee. The Academy’s grant-in-aid will contribute up to $4,000 (AUD) towards this fee for each attendee. The Academy will pay the registration fee at the conclusion of the meeting. If the final figure for the registration fee exceeds $4,000 (AUD) after conversion the attendee must pay the difference to the Academy before 31 July 2023.

As per the guidelines for this scheme, Monash University may only submit a total of one application per department, up to a maximum of two applications across the University.

Final applications are due to the funder via SmartyGrants by 5pm Wednesday 28th of September 2022. The following deadlines are advised to give applicants the maximum amount of time to draft a full application:

• Deadline for submission of EOI to Faculty: 10AM 19th of September 2022
• Reviewing by cross-Faculty panel and notification of outcomes: by the 26th of September 2022
• MRO deadline for compliance check (via Pure): 27th of September 2022
• Deadline for submission of final applications: 5pm 28th of September 2022

The two shortlisted Monash applicants will be advised to proceed with their full application submission and entry of their application into Pure

BRIEF DETAILS

The Community Wellbeing program area seeks to identify and support those organisations which have well thought out projects that seek to help vulnerable members of the community to overcome the challenging circumstances in which they find themselves. The Foundation favours programs that are preventative in nature and seek to address the root causes of disadvantage.

To improve circumstances for vulnerable members of the community, this program area supports organisations that seek to establish pathways for vulnerable individuals such as:

• creating employment pathways for people with disabilities or otherwise vulnerable individuals
• assisting individuals and families at risk of or experiencing homelessness and all that goes with it.

 

IMPORTANT

·  Applicants must first speak with the Ian Potter Foundation’s Program Manager Alberto Furlan on 03 9650 3188 before submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) to be considered eligible to apply. After the initial conversation, the Program Manager will invite suitable candidates to apply for the EOI.

·  The Foundation only considers grant applications in excess of $100,000 in this program area and these are usually considered as multi-year grants.

·    Proposals that are collaborative and/or share knowledge with the broader sector are encouraged.

·   The Ian Potter Foundation rarely awards the full amount of any project.  Please ensure that you have identified other potential funders prior to applying. 

 UNIVERSITY LIMITS AND EOI PROCESS

A maximum of TWO applications may be submitted by an organisation in a given grant round for this program.  The MRO will therefore run an internal EOI process if the number exceeds the allowed limit for the EOI submission to the Foundation.  The internal EOI panel will select the applications for submission to the Foundation.

Applicants must complete the attached MRO EOI form and email the completed form with CV of the PCI only  (maximum two pages) to  mro-applications@monash.edu by 10 am Monday, 22 March 2021.  Only those applicants who have been advised by the Foundation that they are eligible to apply and invited to submit an EOI should complete the MRO EOI form.

Please note that ONLY the applications selected for submission through the internal EOI process will need a corresponding Pure record.

MRFF 2020 Clinician Researchers: Applied Research in Health NOW OPEN

The previously forecast  2020 Clinician Researchers: Applied Research in Health is now open

This grant opportunity will fund projects in three funding streams:

·         Stream 1: General practitioner-led teams

·         Stream 2: Medical specialist-led teams

·         Stream 3: Allied health-led teams.

Grants are up to $3M over 3 years, and everyone is encouraged to use the support outlined below.

Compulsory Research Integrity Training from 2021

 As communicated on 9 December 2020, the Research Integrity Team in the Office of the Senior Vice-Provost and Vice-Provost (Research) has advised that in light of Monash University's continued commitment to the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and ensuring all research conducted at our institution is carried out with the highest integrity, we will be moving towards implementing compulsory Research Integrity training for our researchers over the coming years.

The training will be rolled out from 1 January 2021 as follows:

 

Commencing 1 January 2021	All successful award recipient Principal Chief Investigators (PCIs, CIAs), must complete online Research Integrity training at the time of notice of award.
Commencing 1 January 2022	All applicant Principal Chief Investigators (PCIs, CIAs) must complete online Research Integrity training at the time of application submission to funder.

Where can I find the training?

Research Integrity training can be found in 'My Development' within the HR & Employment tile on the my.monash homepage. Once within 'My Development', simply search for 'Research Integrity' to bring up the training module.

The training can be undertaken by anyone at any time, but will be compulsory for Principal Chief Investigators as outlined above from 2021. Please note, award monies for successful awards will not be released by R&R unless this training has been completed.

Once completed, training is valid for 5 years.

NHMRC Investigator Grants: MNHS Top 5 Publications Review Initiative

The Faculty Research Office is offering reviews of your Top 5 publications in your Investigator Grant application.  This review is open to all MNHS applicants.

Applicants who participate in this initiative will receive two anonymous reviews of the Top 5 publications section of their application.  Two reviews will take place:

1) One anonymous review will be conducted by members of the Faculty Review Academy, an esteemed cohort of MNHS researchers with extensive NHMRC experience as Fellows and/or reviewers.  
2) A second anonymous peer review by a fellow applicant.  

In order to receive a review, you must conduct a peer review as well.  You will not receive your reviews until you have submitted your peer review.  Reviewers and applicants will be matched by broad research area.  Detailed instructions will be provided to peer reviewers.  It is not necessary to have any reviewer experience to participate.  

Reviews will be conducted on a rolling basis.  Applicants can request a review any time before 8 March by filling in this form.  They will receive their review 7-14 days after the request is made. Full instructions can be found in the form.

Young Tall Poppy Science Awards 2021 NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN

 

This year's Young Tall Poppy Science Awards are now open for nominations, closing 6 April 2021.

These national awards recognise early-career researchers who are passionate science communicators, with excellent research achievements in science, mathematics, engineering, technology, medical research or social/behavioural science. Up to 12 awards have been made annually in Victoria, ahead of the national competition.

Requirements:
Candidates must have graduated from their PhD between 3 and 10 years ago (after accounting for career interruptions), but can be of any age (unlike in previous years). Only Australian/NZ citizens and Australian permanent residents are eligible. Other conditions apply. Candidates will also need the support of a senior nominator in their own field, who will need to participate in completing the nomination.

·  Please monitor the AIPS website for updates on session dates/times.

Prime Minister's Prizes for Science 2021 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

 

This year's Prime Minister's Prizes for Science are now open, with Stage1 due 9 March 2021. 

These prestigious, national prizes are awarded annually, and recognise achievements in maths, science, engineering, IT, technology and medical research. Further information about the Prizes is provided below and the scheme guidelines are attached.  Please note that Prizes 3 - 5 (below) are open to ECRs <10 years post-PhD.

If you are aware of a researcher or team with a truly outstanding success story, please let them know about this opportunity. Brief information about the Prizes

1. Prime Minister's Prize for Science ($250,000): 
Outstanding & original advancement of knowledge, that has impacted science or wider. Open to individuals and teams. 

2. Prime Minister's Prize for Innovation ($250,000):
Innovative translation of science to product/service that has substantially benefited Australia. Individuals or teams.

3 & 4. Malcom McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the year ($50,000) and Frank Fenner Prize for Life Scientist of the Year ($50,000):
Exceptional & original science (<10 yrs ago) with potential/realised benefit to human welfare/society. Open to ECRs (<10 yrs post-PhD), with a minimum of 4 yrs research experience in Australia.
 
5. Prize for New Innovators ($50,000):
Excellent early R&D with substantial recent progress towards commercialisation that will measurably benefit Australian economy/society/environment. Open to ECRs (<10 yrs post-PhD), with min 2 yrs research in Australia.

Each prize recipient receives a medallion, lapel pin, prize money as described above and an award certificate.

 

NHMRC Synergy Grants MRO Application Reviews

 

The MRO's Research Development Team will be supporting the 2021 round of NHMRC Synergy Grants applications. 

The objective of the Synergy Grants scheme is to support outstanding multidisciplinary teams of investigators to work together to answer major questions that cannot be answered by a single investigator. Just 10 grants are awarded, each valued at $5M (total, over 5 years). 

The Research Development Team reviewed all Monash submitted 2019 Synergy applications (n= 9; 5 @ Stage 2; 3 awarded) and is available to discuss trends, and effective strategies to strengthen your application.

MRO Reviews

The Research Development Team will be conducting reviews of the Synergy section, and will provide a generalist review of the Knowledge Gain section (prioritising the first page and aspects of scheme fit). Unfortunately they don't have capacity to review the individual track record responses.

NHMRC Investigator Grants, Faculty MNHS Career Disruption Support Initiative

The Faculty Research Office is offering reviews for NHMRC Investigator Grant applicants who have experienced career disruptions.  It is a strategic priority for the Faculty to provide support to researchers who have experienced career disruptions to ensure they are not disadvantaged. This review is open to all applicants in MNHS, at all Investigator Grant levels, who have experienced career disruptions.

Applicants who participate in this initiative will receive one anonymous review of the Career Disruption and Career Context sections of their application.  The reviews will be conducted by members of the Faculty Review Academy, an esteemed cohort of MNHS researchers with extensive NHMRC experience as Fellows and/or reviewers.  

Reviews will be conducted on a rolling basis.  Applicants can request a review any time before 8 March by filling in this form.  They will receive their review 7-14 days after the request is made. Full instructions can be found in the form.  

The NHMRC defines career disruptions as a prolonged interruption to an applicant’s capacity to work, due to:

·  pregnancy

·  major illness/injury

·  carer responsibilities.

 

A period of career disruption is defined as:

·  a continuous absence from work for 90 calendar days or more, and/or

·  continuous, long-term, part-time employment (with defined %FTE) due to circumstances classified as Career Disruption, with the absence amounting to a total of 90 calendar days or more.
