MHTP Technology Platform news: MMI update

With the move into the new TRF building last November, the microscopy facility MMI-MHTP became integrated into the MHTP Technologies Platforms network. This facility has the opportunity to expand and acquire new systems and techniques. 

New equipment includes a confocal microscope (Olympus FV1200), a stereology system (Olympus and Visiopharm) and two multi-well-plate imaging systems. An upgrade of the Nikon C1 confocal microscope expands its capabilities to serve as an automated imaging platform for slide scanning if required. On the image analysis side we have successfully acquired programming capabilities to customize and automate image analysis pipelines.

In 2015, super-resolution microscopy was established as a new capability in MMI and has already resulted in several publications in prestigious journals. A second leading-edge technique, light sheet microscopy, is currently being implemented. Both techniques are currently available at MMI Clayton Campus to researchers at the Hudson Institute and will be set up at the MMI-MHTP node in the near future as well.

A seminar to showcase our MMI-MHTP capabilities will be held in early May. Details to follow.

SCS researcher wins Monash Micro Imaging competition

Congratulations Dr Michaela Finsterbusch, winner of the Monash Micro Imaging (MMI) annual photo competition.

Not new to photography, Michaela was also a finalist in the 2014 MMI competition--her photograph was the feature for October in the 2015 MMI calendar.

Images must be taken on an MMI microscope and are judged on their artistic merit.

Michaela's winning photo shows a 3D reconstructed image of a mouse stomach, where immune cells (macrophages) in green are located along a network of collagen fibres in blue.

Michaela is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Leukocyte Trafficking Group, Centre for Inflammatory Diseases.

Monash Micro Imaging photo competition - entries now open

The 2015 imaging competition is now open for entries.  We would like original images taken on MMI instruments. Remember they will be judged on their artistic merit so you are allowed to
manipulate them.

The 13 best images will be used in our 2016 calendar and other advertising material. Our sponsor Life Technologies provides great prizes for the 3 best images. The closing date for entries will be 30th October 2015.

Competition Rules
  •  Image resolution should be as high as possible
  •  Images will be published on the MMI website, posters and other  advertising material so don't  submit any unpublished data
  •  Maximum of 3 visually distinct entries per person
  •  Images must have been taken on a MMI microscope
  •  Submit images in a .tif format no greater than 10 Mb in size
