New academic appointment in Surgery - Adjunct Clinical Professor Eugene Ek

Professor Julian Smith is delighted to announce the appointment of Adjunct Clinical Professor Eugene Ek to the Department of Surgery.  Prof Ek is an academic Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in hand, elbow and shoulder surgery, with a particular interest in complex reconstructive surgery of the upper extremity and arthroscopic surgery.  He has been a member of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Dandenong Hospital, Monash Health since 2013 and is actively involved in teaching medical students, orthopaedic registrars and hand surgery fellows from all around the world. His main research interests are in hand and wrist biomechanics, treatment of scaphoid fractures, elbow arthroscopy and management of rotator cuff pathology. As part of the Department of Surgery/SCS, he hopes to continue to contribute to the research output of the academic department and also train and mentor future academic surgeons.

Department of Surgery celebrates 50 years

The Department of Surgery in the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health has celebrated its 50th anniversary with a dinner held at the Monash Club on Friday, 7 June 2019. Hosted by Professor Julian Smith, Head of Department of Surgery at SCS and Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Monash Health, the evening was an opportunity to bring together those who have been pivotal in the department’s success since its beginnings.
