Eugene Fredericks captains Mazenod Old Collegians to take out cricket premiership in easy victory

Congratulations to our own Eugene Fredericks who captained his team to an effortless victory over St Cecilia's South Camberwell on the weekend to take out the Veterans (over-40s) Division 5 Cricket Premiership in the Eastern Cricket Association.

It was a comeback for the ages after the Mazenod Old Collegians were humiliated in the previous three encounters at the home ground of their rivals, who were perched atop of the competition all season.

The home teams' hopes faded early on with superb bowling and fielding by Mazenod who had St Cecilia's all out for 122, with overs to spare.

A dodgy old knee that prevented Eugene taking to the bowling crease this season couldn’t dampen the spirits of our multi-talented (cricket captain/rock star/quiz master) School Manager, who last year won the team Bowling Award!

The convincing win also meant Eugene missed being a hero with the bat, but he did have a good year averaging 55 runs, the third-highest in the team.

After a neck-and-neck year between competition leaders St Cecilia's and Mazenod, the result played out beautifully for Eugene and his team, securing the J.Edgar Shield with 8 wickets to spare.

In his post-match interview Eugene said, “Being a cricket captain is a lot like being a School Manager. One has to follow the rules, attend meetings, be highly organised, think clearly, be a step ahead of the game, and try to keep everyone happy!”

Final scores
St Cecilia's South Camberwell 10/122
Mazenod Old Collegians 2/123

(Footnote: Eugene is a proud old boy of De La Salle College, but is now warming to Mazenod)
