Representation is a critical aspect of OHS, as described by the Victorian OHS Act (2004). To be effective, it is believed the committee requires a balance of perspectives covering a wide range of activities and experience levels.
The Faculty is seeking nominations for membership as representative members of this committee.
Representative members are asked to support the committee by participating in open and frank discussion about each item of business. As experience and skills are relevant, with agreement, members may be asked to participate in Working Groups.
With the aid of representative members, the committee will critically assess OHS related concerns and risks related to activities the Faculty is undertaking, make recommendations for remedial measures, and ultimately implement actions to reduce risk.
Specifically, the committee will:
- Promote and facilitate cooperation between staff, students and management in the implementation of OHS policy, procedures, guidelines and programs across the faculty;
- Ensure that a prompt, uniform approach, based on best practice and continuous improvement, is adopted by the faculty and all its operations, in all matters of OHS;
- Monitor and continuously improve faculty compliance with OHS legislation, standards, codes of practice, policy and procedures through programs such as the Faculty OHS plan;
- Review the OHS and Wellbeing performance of schools, departments and centres within the faculty to ensure that all areas consistently achieve a high standard;
- Co-ordinate the development and implementation of planning processes that are consistent and aligned with the university's broader strategic planning in order to ensure a proactive approach to OHS management across the University and all its operations;
- Promote OHS awareness and appropriate behavioural and cultural change of staff and students throughout the Faculty;
- Escalate issues and successes relevant to the wider Monash Community to the Monash University Occupational Health and Safety Committee (MUOHSC).
It is intended that the committee will be limited to an odd number, less than 20, in membership, so not all applicants may be successful. Although appointed Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) who choose to apply will be preferentially selected as employee representatives, selection with respect to representation of activities is a priority.
It is envisaged that this committee will aid in promoting a strong and proactive OHS culture within the Faculty and we encourage anyone interested to apply.
If you would like to discuss your potential candidacy, please feel free to contact the Committee Chair, Jodie Weller (Faculty Operations and Planning Manager) or your Faculty OHS Consultants.
