ARC extension for DECRA 2022 and FT 2021 applicants- Clarification

On 1 May 2020, Professor Sue Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of ARC provided an update on ARC grants processes via a Network Message.

Within this was the introduction of a one-year automatic eligibility extension for all DECRA and Future Fellowships (FT) applicants in their final year of eligibility.  This prompted many enquiries to the MRO seeking clarification as to how this applies to candidates.

For DECRA specifically, we have received the following confirmation from the ARC:

'If a researcher, who has a PhD award date with eligible periods of career interruptions that would be commensurate with an award of PhD date on, or after 1 March 2016, is in their final year of eligibility, then automatic final year extension will apply.

However, the researcher is only able to apply in one round either for DECRA 2022 or for DECRA 2023. They cannot apply in both rounds.'

As in previous years, If an applicant has exceeded the limits already outlined in subsections C3.5 & C3.6 of Discovery Program Grant guidelines (2019 edition) then final year extensions will not be applicable.

For FT21 applications, the same logic applies. Researchers who have their PhD award dates with eligible periods of career interruptions that would be commensurate with an award of PhD date on, or after 1 March 2006, is in their final year of eligibility and the automatic one year extension period is applicable. Again, FT applicants are only able to apply to either FT 2021 or for FT 2022.
