Six new funding opportunities were announced yesterday from the Medical Research Future Fund, supporting a variety of research.
Applications are now open for all schemes, and will be administered by the NHMRC through their Sapphire system. All have the same deadlines, and all require minimum data. Guidelines are available via Grant Connect.
*Please note that a 2nd round of the 2020 International Clinical Trial Collaborations is also planned, to close 3 Mar 2021.
New Opportunity 1: MRFF - 2020 International Clinical Trial Collaborations (Round One)
These grants support Australian involvement in international collaborative clinical trials research, through the establishment and coordination of clinical trial site(s) in Australia. The objective is to examine the effectiveness of novel health treatments, drugs or devices (or novel applications of existing interventions) in 'usual care' settings, to help support a decision on delivering the intervention in an Australian setting. The trial should not have commenced recruitment at the Australian site(s). Pre-clinical studies, phase I and II trials, post-market monitoring, behavioural interventions and preventative healthcare will not be supported.
Two rounds of submissions are possible: 11 Nov 2020 and 3 March 2021. $6.3 M funding is available in each round. Projects may be up to 5 years in duration. A CI must not be named on more than one application per round. Letters of support will be required from participating international research organisations. For more details about the opportunity, please see Grant Connect.

New Opportunity 2: MRFF - Clinical Trials Activity Initiative - 2020 Rare Cancers, Rare Diseases and Unmet Need - General Call
Note that a separate call has already been made for COVID-19-related trials (closing 23 Sep). This call is for rare cancers, rare diseases and unmet medical need more generally. Applications to this grant opportunity must propose a single clinical trial that addresses a gap in current research and/or knowledge. Recruitment should not have commenced, however new treatment aims of established trials will be considered.
A total of $25 M funding is available under this opportunity. Projects may be up to 5 years in duration. A CI must not be named on more than one application to this ('general') call. For more details about the opportunity, please see Grant Connect.
Research Development Support
The Research Development Team is available to provide advice on how to address the assessment criteria effectively and for strategic review of complete drafts. We encourage researchers to seek this support earlier rather than later, by contacting Gabrielle Callander in the Research Development Team - mro.researchdevelopment@monash.edu.
New Opportunity 3: MRFF - Million Minds Mission - 2020 Mental Health Research
It is anticipated that this grant opportunity will fund two mental health clinical trial networks, one focusing on children and youth, and the other on adults. The networks must be multidisciplinary and inclusive (i.e. be national in coverage, and include rural and regional participation and engagement of marginalised populations). The networks should be aligned with the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance and preference will be given to networks that avoid duplication and can demonstrate their approach to long-term sustainability.
A total of $24 M funding is available under this opportunity. Individual grants will be awarded between $8 and $12 million in value, and must be completed by 30 April 2026. A CI must not be named on more than one application to this call. For more details about the opportunity, please see Grant Connect.
