Dr Ai Li Yeo receives best clinical abstract award at EULAR

Congratulations to Dr Ai Li Yeo who has received the best clinical abstract award at the 2019 European Congress of Rheumatology (EULAR) held in Madrid last week.

Dr Yeo, a PhD candidate at Monash University, and Rheumatologist and Infectious Disease Fellow at Monash Health, was one of six people to receive the best clinical abstract award out of almost 5000 submitted.

Dr Yeo presented her abstract Less is More: ANA lysing the impact of repeated antinuclear antibody testing in the opening plenary session of the congress. The study, which looked at the utility of repeating an ANA for the diagnosis of a new ANA-associated rheumatological condition, found that the majority of tests (80%) remained the same when repeated. When it did change, the positive predictive value was still extremely low at 0.01, with only five new diagnoses in just under 5000 patients. The few patients who had a new diagnosis had evidence of persisting or evolving clinical features. The potential next steps from this research are to implement an alert to prevent repeat ANA tests.

Speaking about her win Dr Yeo said, "I am honoured to be given the opportunity to present my research at EULAR and to be the recipient of this award. I would like to thank my supervisors - Professor Michelle Leech, Professor Eric Morand, and Dr Suong Le for their support and encouragement".
