SCS appoints new Director, Undergraduate Medical Education

Congratulations to Associate Professor Julia Harrison on being newly appointed as Director, Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) in the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health. Associate Professor Harrison takes over the role from Dr Sally Ayoub, who will be returning to clinical work at Monash Health, accepting the position of Deputy Director, Rheumatology.

Sally has led UME for the past six years, during which time the educational and student experience outcomes for SCS have been outstanding.

SCS Head of School, Professor Eric Morand said “Health professional education sits alongside research as the lifeblood of SCS. Sally has directed medical education at SCS with incredible aplomb, building a robust management structure while maintaining a fantastic positive culture. SCS, the Monash Medical School, and all its graduates owe Sally a huge debt of thanks for her tireless efforts, which somehow she always made look effortless"

The School of Clinical Sciences medical student placements across years 3, 4 and 5 of the Monash MD program is the largest of the clinical schools at Monash University, making its Undergraduate Medical Education division more responsible for Monash doctor qualities than any other.

Having gained her own MBBS with Monash University, Sally said it was an honour to be able to give something back to the University, and to have the opportunity to lead such a fabulous team and department.

Sally knows the program will be in good hands and is pleased to be able to handover to such a dedicated educator in Julia who she said taught her so much as a student, and later as a junior doctor.

Associate Professor Harrison brings with her a very strong academic background in medical education, and a clinical background in Emergency Medicine, as well as a strong vision for building on the great foundations of UME at SCS, increasing innovation and academic activity in the science of medical education and the use of simulation.

“We are excited to welcome Julia to this role and look forward to her caring and innovative approach yielding further advances in the teaching of Medicine at Monash and SCS” Professor Morand said.

Associate Professor Harrison will commence in the role this month following a short transition period.
