The Monash Health
Translation Precinct (MHTP) received nearly $16 million to lead 26 research projects
in last week’s National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) funding announcement – the second largest amount given to
a research precinct in Australia.
Prime Minister, the Hon
Tony Abbott MP and Federal Health Minister the Hon. Peter Dutton MP, announced
the NHMRC grants across six
schemes worth more than $539.8 million last Friday.
Monash University ranked
first for both the number of grants and the total amount funded in this year’s
round.
Of the $15.9 million awarded
to MHTP, $1.7 million will fund projects in the School of Clinical Sciences at
Monash Health (SCS), one Early Career Fellowship, one Translating Research into Practice
Fellowship and two Project Grants.
Professor Richard
Kitching, Head of the Centre of Inflammatory Diseases, received an $890,000 Project Grant over
four years to research how the kidney is injured by CD8+ cells in vasculitis. Similarly, Associate
Professor Dominique Cadilhac will use her $475,000 Project Grant to determine the
cost-effectiveness of a novel Australian Stroke Telemedicine program, known as
the CAST study.
Other funding recipients
at SCS include Dr Dennis Wong (Department of Medicine), who received an Early Career Fellowship to continue his research into accute coronary syndrome, and Dr Judi Porter (Department of Nutrition & Dietetics) who received a Translating Research into Practice Fellowship to investigate
barriers to protected mealtimes implementation to prevent and treat
malnutrition.
In addition, both
Professor Kitching and Associate Professor Cadilhac were involved in successful
bids with other lead organisations under the NHMRC Centre for Research
Excellence grants scheme. Professor Kitching will be part of the Centre for
Personalised Immunology, led by the Australian National University, while Associate Professor Cadilhac will contribute towards the Centre for Research
Excellence in Stroke Rehabilitation and Brain Recovery, led by the University
of Melbourne.
